Does anybody ever use plain old mild steel for liners? Any reason not to? Is there a standard thickness or does it really matter?

Reg steel is fine and about .040 is right for med to large knife. .o30 for smaller one

I agree with John, just remember maintenance is gonna be essential and make sure you use a good adhesive on the scales so rust does not start to form under them.

Will do. I may just see if I can find a small sheet of stainless before I commit to the mild. Thanks!

Another liner material to consider is brass,it has been used for along time. Does not corrode or rust like steel.
If you need a 3 x 5" piece or so PM me your address and I'll send you some .040 416 SS.
