Slip joint pivot problems

Pivot holes on slipjoints do not have/need to be precision reamed.
As a matter of fact, they should be considerably oversized.
Thanks for your post! I like your auto's... not allowed to own then here unfortunately.

I guess making the holes to big will make the knive feel like its moving and thats most likely not what you mean. Of course it still has to feel sollid. Slip joint will not have lock-rock. Is that why precision reaming is not nessesary and you can get away with more room? Or is there an other reason?

The stability of the blade is managed by the liners and backspring.
Most factory slipjoints have oversized pivot holes.

What do you consider considerably? I’m a little surprised to hear you don’t ream your pivots. I know factory folders typically don’t, but I always figured it was a step worth doing for precision and smoothness sake. Maybe I’m overthinking things.

I like to ream my holes, because I want them round.

Drill bits do not always make round hole, but reamers do.

Considerably- what you would consider "sloppy."
I don't make slip joints, BTW.

I put the slip joint back together today. Learned al lot and realised my pinstock is of very very very bad quality... I never gave it a second thought but afther the the advice for precision holes and pinstock, I checked it with a 15x magnifier. It full of scratches lenghtwise. :eek:I sanded the scratches out and polished the tanghole nice and smooth. Peened it together with a lot less peening and just a small shamfer to make room for the expanding pin. Went a lot better and it took a lot less time to get right.

Thank you all for your time and advise!

To all of you whom that took the time and effort to help and advise me on my pivot problems.

I realize that your time is valuable so i think its only fair that i show you what i have done with it. This is what i've done with it so far.
Made a small friction folder with a hardend pivot screw and reamed holes. Just to learn the proces of putting in a pivotscrew.

(Cant seem to get the picture to show...)

After that, i made this slipjoint. Reamed holes, hardend pivot screw. Its not pinned yet.
