Hello. Sorry if this is already answered. I have a sowbelly made by Bill Simons. It has very nice mammoth covers. But a broken spring. Can anybody recommend somebody that can repair it? I hate to just throw it out.

I appreciate your advice.

I knew there was a good reason 😂 heres the thing about knife repairers and mod shops. chopping apart a production knife is one thing. repairing a custom knife is a slightly more precarious situation. Ive heard of makers repairing their own stuff years after a sale as good customer service. I have seldomly heard of another maker willing to take a part knife someone else made to fix an issue. Your best best is maybe going the mod route to see if they can make a spring to repair the knife.

If he patterned it after a production knife you might be able to use a spring from a donor knife. Still a difficult job because mammoth is easy to crack but doable with the correct tools.
Can you post a photo?

I can’t tell the length, but it sure looks like the case version of the knife. That might be a possible answer since the maker is no longer with us

The spring (broken) is in the picture. Do you think somebody could weld it back to the knife? I really appreciate all of your thoughts. It’s such a good looking knife to go to waste. (I purchased it off a popular used/custom knife website. They refunded the money but also gave me the knife to try to repair.)

Can't think welding would work, it's a question of the tension and springiness of the spring I'm afraid. Ernie1980 Ernie1980 suggestion of maybe using a spring from a CASE could be a valid approach if you can get a craftsman, artisan, repairer on the Forum to do it for you, might not be inexpensive though - but surely worth it.

If the spring is not replaceable/fixable, somebody around here may be able to do a blade delete and at least save the knife with the two secondaries.

Welding isn’t an option. Will completely jack up the treating on the spring.

Reach out to custom makers. Many don’t want to touch something that they didn’t make, but being as they man has passed, you might find one that’ll take it on. I’d try Tom krein. Maybe try Glynnbad here. Not sure if he does springs and heat treating. Anyone who takes it on might only take it on under a swear of not their problem if something goes south. That’ll be a chance you’re just taking.

Using a case spring won't work. The Simons Sowbelly is slightly shorter and the springs are not the same.

Best bet would be sending it to someone to make a spring. Try the knifemaker section on the forums here.

Thank you. Good advice.
