Sal mentioned in this thread something about a new Slipits line. I have a UKPK already but would like to know what other knives are already in this Slipits line or any info on upcoming models.

thanks!

Hi Morrowj,

This tread might be helpful:

Contains lots of info about this new line of slippits, with the first being the UKPK and the new "Urban" featuring different blade styles. There were some concept models of additional slippits presented in the mini shows, too (with the byrd "mini" wings with CF inlays being the one closest to release, I think).

Some pics of it:

It isn't that big, so no problem with the lack of a clip:

Thanks a lot...much appreciated.

The Urban looks like a slam dunk. I want some.

I just got the UKPK and love it. I look forward to the Urban. The 2.5" blade will allow me to lawfully carry the knife in the federal building where I work, provided I grind 1mm or so off.

18 U.S.C. Sec. 930(g)(2) excludes "a pocket knife with a blade of less then 2 1/2 inches in length" from the definition of "dangerous weapon."

Of course, if Spyderco would like to make the Urban so that it can be lawfully carried in a federal facility without alteration, it would sure make some federal employees -- not to mention others who go into federal buildings -- very happy. How about 2.4"? ;)

Note: the 930(g)(2) exclusion does not create a "right" to carry a < 2.5" blade into a federal building. Rather, it means you won't be breaking the law if you do. Rules vary from facility to facility.

Gentlemen---The "slippie" interest is building! I think that's cool. Thanks!

I don't see anything in those rules that specifies a non-locking knife. So, while there's nothing wrong with wanting a "Slipit", the fact is, assuming building rules did not flat out prohibit knives, you could carry a Kiwi or Kopa into a Federal building without having to do any grinding as both have blades well under 2.5 inches.

They would also be less "tactical" looking that the Urban and thus less likely to raise eyebrows. I don't think most people, inside government building or out in "the real world", pigeon-hole knives as weapons based on the presence or absence of a lock. I think many are blissfully unaware that some knives lock open and some do not. On the other hand, at least in my experience, far fewer "NKPs" have a negative reaction to a bolster & scales knife of a given size than a sold color handle one.

I agree.

The "look" of a knife has much to do with the perception of "NKP's".

The orange and foliage green G-10 scales are far less "tactical" looking and seem to be more easily accepted (ignored).

I'd like to do more variations of the Urban, like bolstered models. It depends on the acceptance of the design concept.

Paul,

It frustrates me that you completely misunderstood the point of my reference to 18 U.S.C. Sec. 930, and apparently Sal did too. Where did I say I thought I needed a non-locking knife in a federal building?! Sheesh.

I don't want a 2.4" Urban because I think I need a non-locking knife where I work. Most of the knives I carry there have locks. And I don't care whether or not it's "tactical" looking -- another point I didn't bring up. Rather, I think I would like to have an Urban when it comes out because it looks like a really cool knife, and it would suit my needs better if it was 2.4" instead of 2.5. This would not just be of benefit to me, but federal workers and those who go into federal facilities. And if the Urban comes out at 2.5", then I'll just have to think about whether I want to grind the point down, or simply not buy it.

I fully understand there are other options, and in fact have a box full of knives with blades < 2.5". I'm not, however, aware of an option that would give me the features of a UKPK in a form I can carry to work. And I've never been interested in the Kopa or Kiwi.

Here's a Byrd that started at 2.5" which I ground shorter. I didn't mind grinding it because, after all, it's a $20 knife. I'd have to think twice about grinding a perfect symetrical leaf blade on an Urban which cost much more.

Bottom line: I'd like to have a knife, like the Urban, with the features of a UKPK, in a form I could legally carry where I work without having to alter it. If Spyderco isn't interested in making this particular knife model federal facility compliant, that's okay too. I just probably won't buy it. I can live with that -- I don't expect them to please everyone. Just thought I'd throw the idea out.
