Slipjoint deal of the month and a common affliction..

I am one diseased fellow as some of you others here are as well, or perhaps even more than just some of you, with the affliction known as Knife Accumulation Disorder, or KAD. We are called other names as well.. Yes, on occasion we have all heard the innuendo and whisperings behind our backs as we walk past a crowd: 'Knife-knuts', 'Steel Addicts', 'Edge Junkies', ect., ect.. Well, its all true of coarse and those of us that are afflicted need to come clean and admit it. It is the first step towards healing.;)

I have found that if I back off ever so slowly, a little at a time, rather than just going Cold Turkey, I believe I will have a real chance at beating this thing.. So from now on if I get a really good deal on a knife, then its not giving in to my KAD, rather its more akin to 'good economics!' Because my fellow Knife-Knuts(oops, sorry:o ) buying a product that is undervalued just makes good sense when you think about the possible investment potential. Or another words, "I may as well buy it for that price fast before someone else does.":D

Which brings me to the subject at hand.. I was lining up my newest slippy's purchased over the last 30 days doing the usual mundane chores of processing, categorizing, labeling, lightly oiling, lightly wiping, fondling, examining, fondling(wait, I said fondling already:eek: ) and then storing and so on, and I realized the very best deal of the month should be shared with the rest of you all, and you all vice-a-verse-a. So please feel free to respond in kind if you wish. It will give us an idea how we all are doing in the market of knifedom..

I will start it off with a recent eBay auction from Bill at Cumberland for the following..

I am usually not a large sodbuster type of guy but, given the aforementioned I thought, "what the hey?".. A 2003 Case XX 3138CV Special Products Mint Set 1 of 100 this one being 037-of-100 for $16.50 and since I had already purchased additional knives prior to this auction the shipping was no extra charge.. How did I do?

Arrest that man!!!!!!Stop thief!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sunnyd,
Though we have not met, I must respectfully disagree with you about KAD being a disease.
KAD is actually an enhanced immune system and those not born with the KAD gene are the weaker species.

That is my story and I am sticking to it. :D

Very nice knife sir!

Most certainly a wise investment and not just feeding an addiction. Oh, wait, isn't denial and rationalization one of the traits of an addiction?

I went from living on the bay and having a constant flow of packages showing up in the mailbox to having bought nothing in at least a month, maybe more, except a steam train knife for my model RR loving brother's birthday I just bought that last night.

Okay, so I haven't not been buying anything. I just started feeding another addiction that traditional knives just seem to encourage - guns. Two currently in layaway, a Marlin 1894 (pre-safety) in .44 Mag, and a stainless 4 5/8 inch Ruger Super Blackhawk. I should get the Marlin out this week, and put some on the SBH, but there is a sweet, blued, S&W 586 with a 4 inch barrel that just feels good in the hand that I may have to liberate if it is still there. I am susceptible to bouts of gun trading fever. However, lately I seem to be building up just the ones I want to keep, leaving me with no good trading material.

Naturally, I start thinking about which knife, or knives should go with which gun(s). What about leather for both guns and knives? What the heck am I going to use any of these cap busters or slicers for anyway?!

Even now, my hands shake as I type. I want, no, NEED a Marlin 39A (pre-safety of course), a pinned barrel, S&W J-frame kit gun in .22lr., probably a Single-Six Convertible, and a Ruger MKII bull-barreled pistol, not to mention a versatile shotgun before I can quit! (My only current shotgun is a short barreled pump for social situations.) Oh yeah, and customizing my left hand Savage .308 into a Mannlicher stocked carbine. (That certainly needs just THE knife to go with it.) Oh yeah, and the long barreled Win 92 repro that just hangs perfect with the really usable buckhorn sight in .357 Mag to mate with the New Vaquero.

The matching of knives starts all over again then. A proper squirrel knife for the 39A, an upland knife to the shotgun, a general trail companion for the kit gun, where does it end.

Naturally, these are investments that will hold and increase value. Unlike other investments these knives and guns can be used in the procurement of food and for protection. Value added indeed!

I do promise to post future, "good deal" knife purchases to show my best intentions at... Oh, horsefeathers! The best way to beat a KAD/GAD addiction is to simply make it a way of life. Then it ain't an addiction, is it? ;)

Just for the record though, most all of my knife purchases while on my binge were in the undervalued category. That's the only way I will usually buy them. I figure as long as my didn't win list is three to four times longer than my did win list on ebay, I'm doing okay, as long as my wife doesn't happen to look over my shoulder and see the amount spent in the last 31 days display during my peak binge periods. :D Heck, theres been a time or two it nearly scared me straight!

Point? Who needs a point? That's like wanting a reason for gathering all these wonderful things up that would make sense to a nermal person. Silly, just plain silly!

However, Anthony, even a nermal can't fault that fine soddie purchase. Not buying it at that price would have been insane!

Sunnyd, Thats a fine lookin sodbuster... You did the only honorable thing a person could do, you bid high enough to give that knife a fine home....
And by doing the right thing, you were rewarded by winning the bidding.
They say the first step is admitting that you have a problem. I have done so and I feel really relieved admitting my problem.. Now I feel a great burden has been lifted and I can continue to work on my addiction by buying some more knives.. :D

A beautiful Soddie and a great snatch, sunnyd!

Tell me when you wanna get rid of it, please! ;) :D

There is a cure for KAD, sunnyd! Just buy two knives, and call me in the morning:D :D

Sorry sunnyd, I think you've misunderstood the acronym KAD. There's nothing to be afraid of or anything you have to slow down or downsize.
KAD stands for Knife Admiring Devotee (devotee here meaning enthusiast).
Which just means you're a true connaisseur and as such you enjoy knives not only for their practical benefits, but also for their beauty.
And as a true connaisseur, of course you immediately spotted the chance of acquiring such a beautiful piece of art as the sod-buster is, for a very reasonable sum. Which art specialist would have let such a good deal slip past him, eh?
Nice catch

I don't know about you but no matter how much I like I can think of *something* I don't like about most of the knives I have. Blades too worn down, not quite the right shape, worth too much to EDC, teeny bit of play here and there, pattern doesn't suit every single forseeable need...

So I'm still looking for that *perfect* one, and it's a lifelong quest that most wives can't understand. Like looking for the Holy Grail.

Opps - gotta run - here comes the mailman!

SunnyD

Don't worry about your KAD, because your wife probably has Purse Accumulation Disorder or Shoe Accumulation Disorder, if she is anything like most of our wives. At least my knives won't end up a the local Goodwill or Salvation Army stores in a couple of years (or less). Nice Sodbuster! And, it was cheaper than a pair of shoes that hurt your feet (but match the purse).
Good Luck! Hope you find more good deals like this one.

No comments on KAD. We all have to fight our own fight. ;)

I got a nice little Christmas present this year: I found an old (1920s/30s) Sheffield MOP and carbon pen knife on eBay, in a "Buy it Now" for $5. I figured it was junk, esp. since no one else had snapped it up, but for $5, what the heck. Seller wanted $7 shipping. Sigh. Oh well. Guy sends me an email a couple of days after I make the purchase: "It only cost me $2 to send it, so I'm refunding you $5 via PayPal." Whoa! Merry Christmas!

And on top of that the knife isn't junk at all. It does have a Sheffield tang stamp, and the blades have a nice dark patina. Oh, they've got a little wobble, and there was some thick gunk on them that I cleaned off (while preserving the patina), as well as getting a little rust out of the frame with some mineral oil and pipe cleaners. Gave me something to do over the Christmas holiday. It's got real nice snap on both blades, and it sharpened up in a couple of licks.

So for $7 I got a nice old MOP Sheffield. Felt so good I had to go out blow $150 on various other pen knives to build out that part of my collection. What disease?

Sam,

You sure got a sweet deal! It's rare when you can find a nice deal like that on Ebay. Usually MOPs are watched carefully during the auction period. Speaking of junk, I always like to go to flea markets and yard sales looking for knives. I have found quite a few super deals. Some people have no use for old knives and consider them junk and sell them for pennies on the dollar. You know, "One person's junk is another person's treasure". I'm not sure of the quote wording, but I'm sure it's close. I assume a similar quote adorns the office wall of the CEO of Ebay. I haven't found any exceptional deals on knives recently on the bay, but I'm still searching. Good Luck!

That sounds good to me, Charlie. I picked up this Case Special Edition Ruger folding hunter with red G-10 handles this month for $13.65 including shipping. Not only that but he's got an identical twin brother that I got for exactly the same price.

In case you're wondering where I got the deal, it was one of those drop ship sites where they have some amazing deals but if you actually receive what you order it's a surprise. However, some times it works out, just like the lottery I guess.

LBG,

You da man! You could sell one of the Ruger's for $50.00 or so and have the first one free, plus a nice profit to buy another knife with. That would be a really sweet deal. Kudos to you! You sure hit a home run with that deal. It sure is a beautiful piece!

Chuck

Well, this "deal" is nowhere as good as a $14.00 Ruger or a $16.00 Sodbuster but I could NOT say NO to this knife! (I'm in control, I'm in control) And it's not an addiction until I start going to "meetings" And I'm NOWHERE near my bottom. Yet!!
This offering is a hammer forged Weidmannsheil lockback with Saw in Winterbottom scales, from Parkers Catalog $35.00
