Slipjoint Fans: What Pattern do You Collect?

Over the years, I have been much more of an accumulator than a collector, however, i have recently become smitten by Pen Knives and Senator or two bladed Congress patterns. There is just something about these small knives that I find irresistable. Who else has a pattern that really rings a bell for them?

I love the Stockman, the style of blades one finds in them is great for an overall user. I especially like the "giant" stock patterns, and the four blade versions you see sometimes.

:D.

I started to concentrate on trappers. I then had the urge for stockman pattern knives. Then I fall for the sod buster and 2 blade folding hunters. I find that I like so many that I cannot just stick to one pattern. So I guess all I can say is if it is a slip joint, I like it :)

Anthony,
About 25 years ago I fell in love with the trapper style. I'm only going to say that I have over 100 of Case Trappers alone.
I just received my new Case catalog and the seahorse whittler really caught my eye. Maybe a new direction in my collecting is starting to brew.
Good Collecting !

Split back whittlers and 4 blade congress are my favorites. Not much of a collection yet, I have to get out of some debt first.

I like the Canoe design, myself. I only have a Trapper in CV right now, but I'm getting a Yellow Synthetic and Silver Script Russlock soon. I saw something the other day that really caught my eye-a Case Red White and Blue Collector's set with a medium Texas Toothpick with red bone handles, a doctor's knife with mother of pearl handles (I think that's what it was, but I only got a glance) and I'm not sure what the other one was, but it had blue bone handles. All of this was in a wood box that was lined and each set numbered from 0 to 500, making them very limited editions. What really got my attention was the serial number- 001 ! I think they were about $250.

I have an admittedly close-minded saying about slipjoints or, as I like to call them, pocket knives: they should have no more than 3 blades and no less than 2.

I like the Trapper pattern a lot. I bought a Case stag trapper, but I think I am just going to store it in the box, and see what the value does.

My other favorite pattern is the 3 blade stockman. I wanted a user so I just ordered a Henckels stockman with green bone handles. These knives look really nice, and have the good old-fashioned high carbon steel blades.

I also really like the Muskrat pattern, and think this is an underrated style. Any Muskrat fans out there?

I no longer carry and use slipjoints, but these were the types of knives that sucked me into this hobby ;) I have always been a fan of the stockman pattern. Specifically, the Case 18 pattern stockmans with the rounded bolsters. Also like the 47 (?) pattern as well, its essentially a larger version of the 18 pattern. Camillus also makes some very nice working grade stockmans too.

My first love and true love is the Peanut. Also get a warm fuzzy over the Butterbean and Whittler. :D

I like Trappers and Stockmans for carrying purposes. I also really like two-bladed large folding hunters.

Lately, whittlers have been getting my attention.

Whatever the pattern, I think it is a crime for a slipjoint to have anything but natural scales, and it is almost a crime for them to have stainless blades.;)

Hi Komondor,

I don't like the Muskrat that much(the blades are a bit too thin for me), but I do like the Texas Jack/Moose pattern that is similar.

Dex, your right the 3 7/8 stockan is the 47. The 4 1/4 is #75:).

Other favorite patterns:

1) Scout/utility.
2) Swell-Center folding hunter.
3) Large "Bulldog" FH(I wish they locked:().
4) 2 blade clasp kife/FH.
5) The Fish tail pattern(hard to find).
6) Regular folding fish knife.
7) Teardrop.

Stockmans rule!
For me the Stockman has everything - looks, practicality and size. Then again can't think of a slipjoint pattern I don't like, stockman just make great carry/user knives.
Also like: Muskrats and Trappers

I'm torn between the Trapper and Stockman.
Right now, I'm leaning more towards the Stockman.
But, the Canoe is definitely catching my eye lately.
Only have a few right now, but I hope to increase my collection in the future.
Looking for Queen, Schatt & Morgan, Bulldog, Mooremaker, Henckels, etc.
I also might have to try one of the Buck Stockmen as an EDC. I hear they really cut great with the hollow grind, and each blade has it's own backspring.

PS: Anybody with slipjoints by custom makers, PLEASE POST PIX!!!
Specially P J Tomes, Tony Bose, Tony Huffman etc

I do not collect slipjoints at this time. I own a couple, but they are users. I think that I might start getting into Sunfish/Elephant toenail and whittler patterns.

Last I heard the trapper is the most collected knife pattern of all time. (may shock some folks here at B.F.)

I enjoy collecting split backspring whittlers, doctor patterns and sunfish especially, but I like them all.
