Slipjoint for non knife guy

I would totally be interested in hearing if he knows anything about (if it exists, of course) pocketknife culture in India. What if there's all kinds of neat things like these great European folding knives that have been discussed frequently here recently?!? Maybe he needs to get YOU a knife :)

I guess I'm partial. Being born, living and most likely dying in the USA, I love nothing more then having Made in the USA on products I spend my money on.

LOL. No, I understand. But the situation being what it is, I am just thinking practically. Same quality as domestic, but at a fairer price. Times are tough, you know? That, and he might not even like knives other then the fact that he HAS to use one.

I guess I'm partial.

We're all partial, only in different ways. Different things move us in terms of women, cars, religion and even (gasp) knives.

Mark, I would be interested to hear how your friend responds when you show him your stockman, multi-tool and hopefully a few other choices.

Voltron - I understand tough times and if the 15 dollar difference is not an option or worth it to him I get that.

I am interested to see how this one turns out also. I have gotten quite a few 'non-knife' friends into knives over the years and they were always glad they did :)

If I may add, I feel the best time to convert non knife people over is when they realize they could use a knife :)

My favorite example of this was on a bike ride. I was on a rail trail and I found a lady on the side trying to fix her bike. An earphone cord had tangled and jammed her crank so she could not peddle. I asked if she would like help and of course she did being miles away from her car. I pulled out an OP6 with the blade black from food prep work. The lady seemed scared of the knife even as tiny as it is...until the thin blade barely cleared the tiny gap to access the cord and cut it in two. I pulled out the cord and she was extremely thankful.

She went on to explain how she has never liked knives but now she can see why someone would carry a pen knife. She was amazed to hear the price of an OP6 also :)

Great story although it boggles the mind how an ear phone cord could get caught up in a crank. Listening for one of those mystery clicks? Yikes.

On another list I'm on, the subject of best cycling knife came up. Grant Peterson (Rivendell Bikes) promotes the SAK Pioneer (iirc) as the best cycling knife. I countered that the Opinel is the best, owing to it's light weight. See? Great minds think alike. In that discussion, somebody posted a link to an Opinel with an engraved handle showing a cyclist riding through the mountains. For the life of me, can't find the link.

The woman's reaction is another story showing that people react very differently and personally to knives. I noted that this week at work when I a table in the hallway had a 18" serrated "cake" knife laying on it from some absurd office party. That huge knife laid there for the entire week and nobody batted an eye. But if I had put my grandfathers cheap Bowie-style hunting knife, with it's comparatively short 6 1/2" blade on the table, all hell would have broken lose!!!

People are just so irrational about blades (including me).

Haha, its a funny world :)

BTW, the cord was on the trail and her front tire threw it into the crank.

Ask him what he likes. Barring that, the Vic Classic is an amazingly functional knife for non-knife people.

My EDC is a Case stockman so of course I think he needs a 3.5" Stockman :D

Sometimes the first, instinctive thoughts are the best.

If he is not a Christian himself, the cross from the Swiss shield on the SAK might be something which might make him reluctant to carry it. I have gifted SAKs in the past to hindus and later on they admitted to me that they would be reluctant to use the SAK because of what their fellow hindus/relatives might say.

Also, if you gift him a knife similar to your own, he will likely feel being honored to have a knife similar to his friend’s one.

The stockman pattern is also distinctively American, and as such would likely be very exotic and interesting for him.

I vote Case mini trapper or a SAK. Great knives for beginners.
If he's worried about the crosses on SAKs, you could get him a Wenger and polish off the emblem.

SAK or SBJ. But I have a non knife friend. I gave him a sod jr and an old uncle henry. he REALLY liked the old knife. Maybe an old small schrade, camillus, etc? Then there is the TL-29...

I have a Made In USA Buck Cadet that would be ideal. Or a Case Swayback Jack. If he is from India, give him something Made in the USA. He will treasure it for life.

I picked up a Red GEC Moose from a forum member. My non-knife guy declined the various SAK and stockmans. He really went for the larger slipjoint. He has no idea how addicting these things can be.

:D

You mean he had is *OWN* opinion on what he liked and didn't like!!!

Hey, good on you for working with him to find his (repeat his) preferences!!!

GEC Redbone Moose??

Your friend/colleague may lack experience but he's obviously got a lot of natural taste! He'll be hardcore in a year:D:D

Leatherman squirt would be good for him I would think, or a Vic tinker.
But keep in mind he may feel safer with something that uses a lock.
