Slipjoint forum poll. Anyone interested?Hi

A slipjoint is a traditional non-locking pocketknife. It is called a slipjoint because the blade is held in place by a "slipping" backspring. That is whay a good slipjoint will have resistance opening and close with a click, also known as walk and talk.

Please excuse my ignorance, but could someone give an example of a slipjoint knife brand? I'm not sure what my opinion on a forum for them is if I can't think of what one looks like. (That's not like an Opinel, is it?)

We're talking about your average everyday pocketknife, for the most part. Many people simply refer to them as jack knives. They commonly have multiple blades in them. Case is probably the most well known slipjoint manufacturer in our circle.

I think we have to many forums now. If we were to get rid of some of the forums that see almost no use then I think that slip joints would be a good candidate for a forum of their own.

A negative aspect of the specialised forums is the “less criticism/too much enthusiasm” factor. I think wide-ranging forums are more objective and less tendentious.

txmoonwolf, a slip joint is the knife your dad probably gave you. A Boy Scout pocket knife, an Old Timer, a Swiss Army Knife (SAK) like a Tinker, are all slip joints, i.e., they do not lock open usually.

I think the current interest in slip joints is fun, but I think forumites in general will move on to another subject before long and the need for a separate forum for slip joints would fade. I do second the motion to create a forum for sharpening, maintenance, and repair. There will always be an interest in these topics.

I would really like slip joints if I didn't have to dig down in the bottom of my pocket to get them (provided I am wearing clothing with pockets, and that I would tolerate it moving around there loose as thay are prone to do) and then drop whatever I am holding in either hand and reach over to pull the blade open. That being said, other than the SAKs, I don't really care for them. I think a slip-joint forum would be great, because those who are less than "a fan" of them, like myself, would not be as likely to encounter posts about them in other forums. This, however, would depend on moderators who are willing to move threads to the correct forum. After all the off-topic "Memorial Day" and "Newborn Relative" posts, and eulogies that I see remain here in this forum, I don't see how a Slip-Joint forum would be effective, as most posts would still be posted, and remain, here.

Thanks to all who answered my question; now to my opinion...if you did make a forum exclusively for slipjoints, maybe you should call it "plain old pocketknives" or something like that, as others might be confused (like me) and put off by the jargon. As to a new forum theme, me and my wife were tossing around the idea of an All Swiss Army Knife forum, since htere always seems to be enough people asking tons of questions about SAKs, that maybe they deserve their own space.

just my 2 cts.

The next time you are at a knife show go by a makers tablethat makes Custom slipjoints,or Traditional patterns.
I have been collecting knives for 40 plus years and have had or handeled,[seen]about every kind of knife this world has to offer.Tacticals came around, and I have bought, sold traded every one that I have ever wanted.[come and gone]
I have yet to sell or get rid of any of my slipjoints. They are timeless.I personally think it takes more skill to make one, than any other type of knife.IMHO

It strikes me that Spark isn't likely to open a new forum based solely upon a couple dozen folks requesting it. I think it would be much more realistic for someone to track the slip joint threads, and the readership #s. I think that is more significant than the # of posts.

If, in fact, there is a significant # of threads on the subject, and a strong readership of them -- at least on average -- then Spark could be convinced that another forum is warranted.

I think all the slip joint fans should start praying now that Richard Rodgers makes a third consecutive Best Folder/Best in Show double at the next Blade show. I tend to think that his success has had something to do with the seeming resurgence of interest in slip joints.

Go for it -- they may not be "techy", but from a historical view they're very interesting. Love my ol' pre-WWII Henckels.

Bugs3x ....couldn't agree with you more. The problem as I see it is that there have been, continue to be, threads
that are posted that are slipjoint related but are posted seperately here in the forms. With that thought in mind
I offered a poll to help pont out that need for a "gathering place" for the slipjoint community. It also
important to note that the tactical community has several forums to hold their voice but yet the slipjoint fan,
and I supect there are many, must make do with individual posts all over the forums. To that end this poll
may gather enough attention to bring into focus the "rest of us" who really like the lowly slipjont.

I would like to have a slipjoint/SAK forum.

It would generate new information exchange,,,,SAK tools and uses,,,,whittling techniques and modifications to knives for whittling,,,,promote the current custom makers of slipjoints.

I think we can benefit from having a seperate forum for slipjoints.I would love to see one.I can also see a problem having to many seperate forums,if we get to specific for every possible subject or knife type we make it troublesome to navigate a forum.Plus,we will have nothing left to discuss in the general forum.I'm for a Slipjoint Forum though, count me in too!

There is merit in the concern about too much focus on one "type" of knife slipjoint or other wise .
Until you consider that the term slipjoint applies to ANY knife that has no locking mechanism
other than the back spring. This would include the much loved SAK and all of the thousands of
non-locking folders that now have no home here. Talk about variety......With a selcecton this large
it 's hard to imaging running out of subjects to talk about!! Handle material, blade fall, backsprings,
etc. that a single locking blade just can not offer. THAT is what I really have missed on all the
forums. Variety ........pure and simple. Knife collectecting is just too much fun to be just one "type"
of knife.
