Anybody here have any information on file blades that were on old sheffield (and other) multi-blade slipjoints, as far as how the grooves were cut, etc? i.e. cut/stamped hot or cold, or filed in? Geometry?

Any books out there that cover any of these topics, and caveats to other tools that were on some of these knives?

Thanks!

javand, you might ask a mod to move this to the 'Traditionals' forum, those guys are incredibly knowledgeable about the classic blades--I'd ask over there if it was me.

K, I got a response via PM from a friend who recommended someone I could talk to, but if a mod wants to move this that'd be fine also. We need a sub-forum for us folder makers here also!

YES, i vote for a folder "shop talk" subforum as well :)

I don't know how it has be done in the past, but given the results i guess the files were cold impressed with hammer & chisel or a knurling tool, and then heat treated with some sort of compound to protect from the athmosphere. But i won't exclude they were cut directly on the heat treated and tempered blanks, with an harder tool....in the end the impressions are very shallow, and the hardness was not so high.
Please tell us the answer as you get a reply from the expert
Best regards
