Slipjoint on a budget

I think the best slippie for food prep is the Victorinox 108mm 'Solo'

I was like you at one time. I only carried the latest tacticial folders but then I got my first slippie. It was a case peanut. I thought it wouldn't scare pepole because it's so small. The little peanut just grew on me. It cuts well beyond what I thought it could. I find a slippie just has more warmth to them. I feel you will grow to love them too.

I agree with Big Rob having just done my 2nd week with a Amber bone Case stockman(my first slippie). now I don't even carry any of my Tac's for work and no-one looks at you as if you are a "Loony" if you have to cut something in public. Buy what looks good to you and stuff the budget, you wont regret it as you will end up spending big anyway.

(P.S. I ordered two more slippies this week, they are addictive)

cowboyknivesandcollectibles.com have them cheaper. I have dealt with Doc at Cowboys excellent man to do any type of business with. Ashley

Thank you very much for this suggestion

HUGE selection, very low prices, and one other thing that is very important to me...

For some reason, a LOT of the online stores default to FedEx/UPS $24.99 for shipping to Canada. As soon as the order is going anywhere outside the ConUS, that's the cheapest shipping that they will use, and it is completely ridiculous.

I e-mailed Doc for a shipping quote, got a reply an hour later that said he would try to do it for around $5

So for now I grabbed these two for less than $25 total:

The post is somewhat odd: damascus and low on funds? These are typically mutually exclusive, but affordable is a relative term.

You can get a case damascus for 100-150 or so. Compared to modern tacticals, that isn't a great deal of money.

For single blade slip joints, your options aren't as robust as multi-blade options, but they do exist. Plenty of sodbusters, canal street has a half moon trapper that looks good, same goes for a queen copperhead/ mini hunter, etc.

For cutting apples just about anything works.

there are plenty of non tactical single bladed options (avec or sans lock) that look nice too, e.g. al mar hawks, Great easter cutlery...

I guess any recommendation depends on a refined criteria list, e.g:

blade number
blade size
lock or no lock
material wood, bone, metal?
blade profile, e.g. hunter, clip, etc.
budget < 25$ < 75$ < 125$...
steel: carbon, stainless....
In pocket or sheath?

Buck has some really nice imported slipjoints at very low prices. Rough Rider is excellent too.

A Muskrat might be a useful food prep(no not skinning muskrats for eating them!)pattern to consider even if Dekz has his first load of Traditionals on the way. They won't be his last...

Dekz,Congrats on your new slip-joints.

Like yourself,I recently started getting back into traditional knives.Like some others have said, there is a warm, nostalgic feeling about them that even the most uber, super steel, dynamite proof locking system,Ti/CF/G10-handled tactical knife couldn't fill.

I too was going to suggest the Case slimline Trapper.I've been buying "one a month" for a few months.I have about 4 of them & love the pattern.I use them for food prep,I eat with them(steak knives) & they're perfect for that task.

I started a thread specifically about the slimline trapper here.

Also,Case is going through some tuff times financially & I'd like to think that my meager contribution(+ suggesting them to others) may be helping out a little(probably not).I'd just HATE to see yet another great American knife company go belly up.

USA Old Timers by Schrade, find them on ebay for around 20 to 30. If you hold out for a NIB or something close to Ebay "mint" you will have a well built, easy to sharpen to scaryness, carbon blade knife. I am a schradeaholic.

How about a full sized Queen Sodbuster in D2 for about $25?

They are online for that, and what a steal. Or should I say steel?

You can get either yellow or black handles for that price.

Find an old Imperial pocket knife on eBay. Cheap at the time, and cheap now, but good blades.
