I've been looking around for a slip joint knife, preferably in Micarta, don't care about the steel. I like the design of the trapper knife but doesn't have to be that. Or the GEC Huckleberry boys knife. I like my Spydercos but sometimes want a slip joint.

Case has a full sized trapper for sale on the big river with smooth black micarta. Have you taken a look at it?
I’m a fan of the trapper pattern and have carried and used them a lot. I think some people would be happier with a mini trapper for edc. It just depends on how comfortable you’re with the larger knife riding in your pocket.

I've got a Boker Prime Barlow in micarta (OD/O-1) and it's a fantastic knife. Linerless, so even though micarta isn't especially lightweight, the knife overall isn't overly heavy. It's a touch smaller than the Boy's knife. You can get them with a spear point or clip blade, and in N690 stainless or etched O-1 tool steel, depending on the model. About $150; I don't know if that's more than you want to spend or not. The integral black/natural burlap one is particularly fetching, albeit a bit more expensive.

How about this ? Admittedly, it's small, but that's what you may want for an EDC (in urban environments and the according police presence... if that is a factor). I love this little knife, it does all I need to do on a daily basis, is extremely lightweight but dependable (exists in other handle material and colours) :

OP, this may not apply to your search but for what it’s worth...If I was looking for a slip joint I’d also go Case. I’d go on to the bay of e and look at Case 70’s dots. IMO they were the last of the real old school Case knives and make really solid users. You won’t find any micarta but jigged bone makes a very nice handle material. Might be worth checking out.

Totally agree. Case is still great value and they have that unique traditional style. Just buy over the counter, choose the one that satisfies you. You Americans can do this. In Europe it's complicated.

Never held a jigged bone handle. Would be open to it.

Another vote for Rough Ryder, especially their "Reserve" line, like Hackenslash said.

This is also a chance to shamelessly post a link to my review of their Swell Center Whittler pattern. So....

I presume you're specifically looking for the traditional two blade Trapper pattern? If so, you have a lot of choices, including all the Chinese made knives (Rough Ryder, Schrade, Imperial, etc), Case, Bear & Sons, and the European companies. Even Cold Steel is offering a knife to match your description.

But there's millions of Trapper knives floating around. It's been one of the most popular patterns for over 100 years. You can easily buy a knife of really good quality for less than you'll pay for GEC by looking at some of the manufacturers that are no longer in business. Camillus, Schrade (not the Chinese ones), Queen, Schatt & Morgan, etc.

Good luck in your search.

My slipjoints:
CRK Impinda: very expensive, but what a knife! Great design, great blade and a super smooth opening and closing.

Lionsteel Bestman Roundhead: I have the micarta version and I carry it a lot. I have bought from lionsteel one of their slip with a clip.

Case sodbuster and GEC BullBuster: I have the yellow delrin Case and the OD Micarta GEC. I like this pattern. The GEC is clearly in a league of its own but both works good for large EDC.

Victorinox: any SAK you want. You can get custom scales from people on the internet to customise yours

That Lionsteel looks very nice. I like the look of the sodbuster also.

For modern slipjoint, look at lionsteel. I like my lionsteel jack. And the Benchmade proper is nice. At a more reasonable price the crkt venandi is pretty and well put together.

For traditional, I like vintage USA made Schrade, or Cammilus. These aren't micarta, but jigged delrin or bone.

Or Boker Solingen knives.

If Spyderco is your thing, they always have a few slip joints in their line-up.
- The Bug, Honeybee, and Grasshopper are a few of the smaller options
- You can still find the Lil Native and PITS slip joints with some searching
- The Roadie is also still available

They don't qualify as "traditional", but might be worth a look.

Case is definitely where I'd look were I looking to make my first foray into the traditional world... Admittedly they occasionally let a real stinker through qc, but for the most part they make a very solid usable knife.
+ 1 on this recommendation. Go with a Case. They make excellent quality knives with a great warranty and service if needed.
