Slipjoints - too old fashioned?

I prefer SJs simply because they do the job better. Easier cutting, easier pocket carry, and they feel better in my hand.

I love slipjoints for the same reasons that I like revolvers and Bark River knives. They have that timeless appeal of beautifull clean designs, natural handle materials and don't rely on new gimmicks and contraptions to keep sales up.

I really like some of the new stuff, specially Spydercos, for their shear utility. But I still use slipjoints a lot, IMHO one of the most useful knives in the world is a slipjoint: the Swiss Army Knife. It is also probably one of the first "tactical" knives. Throw in some nice custom scales to replace the plastic ones, and you have an awesome knife.

The alox models by Victorinox are the ones I probably use the most, my copper Cadet comes with me when other knives would be too bulky, and my alox Classic and Electrician Plus combo can handle all of my daily chores. I still carry a one hand opener for emergencies.

Precisely why I love them so much. I'm hopelessly nostalgic and fixated upon traditional style items, whether it's knives, firearms, or even furniture. Give me a big old jigged bone folding hunter and I'm far far happier than I would ever be with some "tactical'' black and plastic blades. :D

I am so glad I live in the modern world of new materials and designs! I never had strong enough nails to open a stubborn slipjoint and I don't see the point of having a knive I can't open with one hand.

But that's just me.

I like both slipjoints and modern styles. I find slippies nice and nostalgic, but much harder to carry without a pocket clip, and a real pain to open, especially outside and in the cold. They tend to be much less convenient, but when I'm not in a hurry, fun to use.

I have modern folders that are thin bladed and cut just as well, so it's more about how I'm feeling that day and what I'm wearing as to whether I reach for a slippie or not.

I will always have a place for my slip-joints...the tackle-box, the tool-box, the truck console, the medicine cabinet...but not in my pocket.

When I was a boy, I always carried a slip-joint (Barlows, hawkbills, stockmans, trappers, jacks, congress, and the wonderful Swiss Army knife).

But then I got older and started to carry a pouch knife on by belt.
Buck 110, Schrade LB7, Case Sharktooth, and my slip-joint got smaller (Case peanut, Vic Classic), and my pants pockets were happier.

And then came the pocket-clip!
No longer did I want to carry a pouch on my belt, but I still had that tiny slip-joint.

And then came the Leatherman Micra!
And away went the tiny slip-joint.

Every so often I'll have a desire to return to the ways of my youth, and I'll go and get my Schrade Old Timer OT33 out and put it in my pocket (or my Victorinox Tinker), but they never seem to last for long.
They just don't rest well in my pocket anymore...and that Micra is so damn handy...and those pocket-clips and thumb-holes (and thumb-studs) are just so damn fast and easy and convient...

I'll always love and admire a nice slip-joint, and they will never be too far away, but I just can't carry them anymore...there's no going back for this boy.

Cheers,
Allen.
