wondering if any one had advice on this.Due to my own ineptess have managed to drill my bolsters with the pin holes slightly out of line thw darn carbide bit just seemed to wander and...any as i said inept anyway ive had to slopout the holes so the pins donr wedge.
what i want to know is will the slightly sloppy and off centre pins effect the solid peening and security of the finished bolster...or should i just make new bolsters

if you take your peening slow and use shims it should be ok just make sure your pivot works free while peening, but if you have the time make some new bolsters.

Bit is wandering? Did you use a punch to mark the hole centers? In my experience that helps keep the bit from wandering. Might be a better tool for that job but I use what's laying around if it works.

I don't know about the rest.

used a smaller dril to start and centre the hole too dont know maybe drill speed too high or just not clamped dead on
i should have made the hole a measured distance first rather than use the knife as a template
any pics of how others clampfor bolster drilling would be cool
i think im just gunna peen one as best i can whack it around a bit and if its solid leave it and it moves well 3 mor sets o bolsters it is

I use super glue as a clamp. Easy way to do bolsters
Cut 2 pieces of bolster material over size, then flatten the mating surfaces.
Take one piece and and position on blade, put some super glue around the edges and clamp for a few minuets.
Drill holes through tang and bolster, now just tap the bolster with a hammer and knock it loose. Clean off super glue.
Put four small drops of super glue on second bolster piece and position first piece on top of it and clamp for a few minuets.
Now drill back through the holes. Put some brass pins in the holes and pien them gently,
now square up the backs of the boster and shape the fronts and finish the fronts to mirror.
Tap the pins out and pop them apart and then clean up the glue and install on blade.

Stan is giving the god info on getting good matched and fitting hole alignment.

As far as oversize and out of round holes and rivets - if the pin is the same metal as the bolster, and you peen carefully and thoroughly, the pin should completely fill the hole and be nearly invisible once sanded flush. Sometimes you have to peen the pin and the metal around the pin to get the hole shut tight.

Thanks guys, i'll try the superglue thing with the next one, and yes I'm using a drill press and vice. I'm using little bolts to hold together while I shape and finish the front, the back I aligned with a file guide. The face where the bolster meets the wood is 90 degrees so I was going to clamp the file guide tight behind it while i peen and hopefully the will keep thing nicely in line till the pins start to pull things in tight. Hopefully all goes well the pin will fall out at the moment , the pins are about 0.126 and the hole is about .130, my main concern is the pins kinking or buckling in the hole.
Well off to finish the fronts and peen carefully I'll keep you posted on my progress
