Slotting micarta

I have a full tang blade blank I had made for me for as my own Christmas gift and possibly want to put a guard on it. I am thinking of doing a micarta guard but will need to do a slotted guard I believe.

What will be the best way to create a slot 3/16 thick while keeping it straight and square?

I have a drill press, hack saw and vise, files, a dremel tool,

I am thinking with drill press to clamp a square piece of wood to my base then use that as a guide? Drill with 3/16 bit, or slightly smaller then finish with hand files to get final size

If you have any other recommendations let me know! Thanks!

I would use g10 rather than micarta, it works very easily with hand tools. When I do a slotted g10 guard, I drill one hole where the front of the blade will be, then saw the slot to the hole with a hack saw careful to stay inside my lines. Then I file to fit the blade.

I've only worked with micarta one time and it was a pain to get to shape.

Is g10 that much easier? Also, can you get a matte look with g10? Or does it always take a polish?

G10 does work a lot easier. It doesn't clog belts either which is very nice. You can just wet sand it to 400-600 and don't buff it for a satin finish.

I think I will try both and see what I like better, I will try the g10 first and see. Do you know where to get a 1/2 piece? I'm browsing and not seeing anything
