Hello Lads and Lasses,

I have been interested in knives for most of my life and in few months I will be in need of a solid combat knife. Even though I have an interest in knives, I really know NOTHING about them, please keep this in mind, as I know very little knife jargon. So, I come to you, O' wise and powerful Bladeforums community, in search of guidance. Anyways, I suppose I should fill you all in on what I currently have so that you don't suggest anything similar. I currently own only two quality knives: a Benchmade HK Nitrous Blitz and a Fallkniven S1. I love them both to death, the blitz being my pocketknife and the S1 my camping/hunting/whatever (it throws VERY well). Upon getting my new knife the S1 will be moved to backup duty. Now, the S1 is excellent for most jobs, but for some roles it just doesn't cut it. Terrible puns aside, I need a chopper that will take whatever I give it and ask for more. I am looking for something with some serious weight, a nice thick blade, resistance to the elements, and a length of 6-8 inches (anything larger would take up too much precious tac-vest space!). Also, as a side note it cannot have any serration on the blade (silly geneva convention). Finally, I would like to keep the price under $500, but if there is some indestructomegachopper9000+ for only $650 don't hesitate to mention it.

P.S. I notice that there is a very large custom knife maker community here. I would be VERY interested in anything that you guys have to offer.

Thanks

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I need something that is non-reflective. It doesn't have to be coated with teflon or ceramic, but it can't be too shiny.

aeinfantry,
Which elements...?
How many months is a few..?

Well, in terms of elements this knife needs to be able to stand up to water, sand and lots of general abuse, but I won't be doing anything insane like setting it on fire or throwing it at rocks. Also, the deadline for this knife is August 2008, but I would like to get it as soon as possible so that I can have some time to get comfortable with it.

What sort of shenanigans are going on in the Busse subforum right now? What is knoboganza? Also, is there any place where I can see or perhaps touch one of these knives before I shell out 600 dollars for one?

A "Ganzaaaaa" is kind of like a shark feeding frenzy, only not quite so polite. Basically, the guys at the Busse shop make up a big batch of various customs that are objects of desire or lust or fetish (depending on your view) for the Busse fans. They then designate a day and approximate time to sell these knives on a first come, first serve basis. The actual chaos is started by Jerry posting a "GO GO GO" post, but if you send in a request before such a post, you get squat. This is why you see posts by "Jerrv Busse", "Jerry 8usse", and others... all fakes, and fair game in love and ganzaas. I once sat here in my chair for 2 hours hitting F5 while the BladeForums computers went Nova so I could get a couple of Meaner Streets and an Active Duty. :o

In order to feel one of the knives, your best bet is to post that you would like to see one in person in the Busse subforum, and hope that someone in your area would like to share the addiction.

For the knife that you want... are you sure you want a big chopper? Give us a little info about the types of things you envision doing with this knife, the type of environment where you will be using it, etc. You might be better off with something other than an additional pound (half kilo) of steel hanging off of your vest.

If you do your research and get a good price, you'll have no problems selling it for what you buy for if you don't like it.

I can also definitely recommend Busse knives. If you are lucky enough to find a Hell Razor/Mud Razor for a reasonable price, -snatch it up. I bought a Mud Razor through the forums a while back and i dont think i would ever part with it. The blade length falls right in the middle of your desired length; its heavy enough for chopping; thick enough for light to moderate prying; has a nonreflective coating; ....you get the picture. Anyways, good luck in your search.

Well I already have the fallkniven, which is still a pretty decent knife for most purposes. The only thing that it lacks is size, because it has a hard time with chopping vegetation and the like. Now I could use a machete, but that is way too big, and I also want something that has excellent cutting capabilities in case the fallkniven somehow fails, because having a backup never hurts. In terms of environment I will be in the Kandahar region of the 'stan, doing stuff I will need quality reliable knives for.

Edit: I now want a hell razor, damn you all.

I don't want to talk you out of a Busse, but you might also want to look at Fehrman's 3V knives. Here's an idea from his website.

This is his First Strike Survival Series ($280 in black crinkle finish).
The handle is linen Micarta (cushioned). The blade steel is really tough CPM-3V with a hardness of 57-59 Rc. The blade is 7.5 inches long and a quarter inch thick. The knife is 13 inches long.

Those Fehrman knives do look rather nifty. Could any of you guys explain the difference between the INFI that Busse uses and the CPM-3V used by Fehrman. Also, how would I go about getting a sheath for a Busse?

Ranger knives are worth a look....the RD series is thick, made for abuse, well under $500, and readily available.

If I'm not mistaken, INFI replaces chromium with nitrogen, along with an proprietary steel formula and heat treat. Could be wrong though/

How about a ka-bar?

Theres a bunch of different ones, so you could probably find your desired thickness/shape/metal combination.

Just another idea to consider.
