the busse isnt stainless, right?

so might not be the best choice considering the elements

Infi is something like 0.1% off of being concitered a stainless steel, I cant remember the element but it is listed in the busse forum somewhere. I have abused my warden and have yet to see it rust. As long as you wipe it off you dont need to worry about infi rusting.
Once you get yourself a Busse there is no other subsitutes. (trust me, I had to get a second job the feed the addiction:o)
You might also want to look at Busse's sister companies, Swamp Rat and Scrap Yard Knife works as they have high quality blades but at a lower price than busse.
Ill take my Busse into combat any day.;)

The whole Busse culture here is a little overwhelming, do any of you HOG's know a Busse model that fits my specs in terms of size, chopping power and general durability? Also, how do I go about getting a Busse other than the ganza that I just missed?

Take a look a a Chris Reeve Pacific. S30V steel, non -reflective blade. I just got one and I'm very pleased with it.

Well to get a model that is out of production you have to find one on the secondary market, the busse for sale area is the best place to look. As for the model well thats a personal preferance.... Take a look at this site, it has all the specs and pictures of the different styles http://www.bussecollector.com/gpage.html5.html
Being rather new to the Busse addiction the models that fit your specs seem to be
SF NO
NO E
Mud Razor
Hell Razor
And any of the steel heart series

You could get a really awesome hand made knife there are several knife makers here on BF that would be more than happy to help you, I think.

Phillip Patton check his website out http://www.pattonblades.com/

I know Phillip has sent several knives out to militarily personnel here or overseas

Ray Laconico

GL Drew

and others...enjoy :)

I would look at Ranger Knives, or Striders (any reason no one else has said anything about Strider?).
The Strider SA Long is 8in. over all. You may also want to look at the MT modle 10, but that one may be over 8in, if I can remeber corectly its around 9 or 10, but I'm not sure, may be worth a look.

You kinda kicked a hornets nest with that question. Some skeletons in Mr.Striders closet saw light...and it wasnt pretty.

+1 on Busse. #1 working mans knife in my book. They have their own forum and fans here on this forum. Havent visited them yet, but I own one and the rest of my fixed blades collect dust.

Noticed you said you were interested in the custom knife community ... you should take a look at the knifemaker 'fixed blade' section. I understand if you want to go the production route, especially with good dependable companies like Busse, Fehrman, Scrapyard (why hasn't anyone mentioned them? Maybe they're out of stock ...) but if you see something on there that you like, most makers' work is reviewed here somewhere on the forums.

Don't forget about the "Knife reviews and testing" section either, since you said you're fairly new to knives it may help you figure out what features you like or dislike on a knife.

Since we're pointing out makers you might be interested in, you might also want to take a look at:
Gossman Knives, known for being tough, affordable
Matt Lamey (RMLamey) on forums, makes a lot of choppers, studied under Jimmy Fikes so there's credentials right there ...
Reggie Barker, cutting competition champion -- haven't kept up and don't know if he's still making stuff, but worth taking a look.

I'm sure there are many others I've neglected to mention. Also, if you're needing a combat knife for an active duty military situation, most makers and some companies will give discounts to active duty personnel, so be sure to ask around.

A friend came back from an exercise over the weekend and had something to show me. Now, most of the guys in my unit have k-bars and me and two others have fallknivens. My friend, one of the k-bar holders, decided to upgrade...to a Busse. He got it off e-bay a few weeks ago and it showed up on Friday. He took it on exercise with him over the weekend and was very impressed, the only issue he had was that the knife cut through the leather of the sheath that the knife came with. He let me touch it and I now must have a Busse.
