Mmm those JKs look delicious Bill! Super generous offer too bud. You rock!

JayDubya here's an idea of what Bill might be able to do for you. Now granted this is a non-scale free-hand drawing (I'm at work and I'm bored) ergo it won't give you an idea of how much blade length is being removed. It's just to show you some blade shapes.

1. Original blade shape
2. Clipped
3. Heavy drop point
4. As above, not as drastic though
5. Super clip
6. Wharncliffe

Personally I'd go any of these shapes. I reckon they'd all work well. The wharnie will probably get you well within your limit but I myself would most likely go 4 or 5. You may even find that they may be just short enough. Who knows. Not me. Nor that crappy drawing..

neeman, you always find my threads no matter the sub-forum and give me good advice. I dig that Frontier Valley. And it makes me realize something I should have thought of from the get-go. I probably want a Scandi grind (or at least a saber) so I can do some whittling.

So let's add Scandi to the criteria. That should narrow the field. I think the Frontier Valley just took the lead in my mind.

Thank you for the compliment

to give you an idea of in-hand
It also sits nicely in the my palm for detailed push cuts
I wear medium size gloves

that Inspiring drawing..

they do, don't they?
if I didnt have an order in, I would have two of the top ordered, one stainless and one in O1. But my Canadian Belt Knife will have to suffice :D. .

Regarding the drawing, that is a fantastic idea and when I get home, I will trace my stock 24 and do some different blade profiles in colored pencil to have them stand out.

If you are colorblind, please send me a pm and I will do separate drawings of any shapes that catch your eye in regular pencil.

Thanks brother. I don't often contribute anything useful to our threads apart from blathering idiocy but this idea came to me from drawings I've seen done by our other far more useful members. An actual scale tracing will be far more beneficial to the JWheel as he'll see exact measurements and reduction sizes of the mods. Can't wait to see your renderings bud.

I have *heard* that LA municipal law measures handle to tip. I don't want to risk it. So thanks for letting me know that about the Izula. I think I'll have to drop it from the list. Dang, it was leading the pack.:(

I may just put this one on ice for now.

This is also my understanding, handle to tip measurement, but no reason you cant just do custom scales similar to what 80sgyrene did below:

Bk11 stripped and forced patina, jimping added, G10 scales.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned a small puuko yet. Kellam and marttiini both make some 2-3 inch blade models with Scandi grinds. I can't add photos from my phone, but maybe one of you guys could look up some pics for the OP. Prices are fairly reasonable too.

Man, too many good choices and no clear leader. This thread might have done the opposite of helping me choose. :)

I think I've looked at all the suggestions now. Gonna sleep on it for a few days then go through them all again. Thanks, guys!

Maybe take an 11,14,24 and mod the tip to shorten it? Drop the point a bit to remove the offending length? Maybe a large choil to reduce cutting edge length? GSOM did a great mod on an 11 that I believe reduced the blade length and added handle length. I have had the chance to mess around with it and there is no loss in functionality all all.

This could be a great inspiration.

I was gonna suggest this ;)....JWheel - a 14 would be a good choice for this project, IMO. Maybe you have a Maker Space near you? You *could* do this with a file & a vise, tho a Dremel would be better...
If you have the inclination, I'd urge you to consider DIY. Don't need a lot of tools; a Dremel and the 14 would cost less than most of the suggestions here - or find a "public access" work space....the 11 I did was my first, and it gets used a LOT - the necker size is SO convenient that I think you're on the right track even if you do go with something off the shelf. Plus, necklace carry is "open carry", right? Good luck sorting it out.

I'll try and add some pics later when I'm not on my phone.

My 11:

Granted I went to a LOT more trouble than you need to....but it was fun and gratifying nonetheless. Thread: 11 mod

Make of it what you will.....

Have you tried a sharpened screwdriver? :D

Here's one that I've wanted to pick up but just haven't gotten around to it yet:

I'm considering the shotgun approach: a SAK Farmer, a BK14 to mod, and either a Candiru or the Blind Horse Frontier Valley for my original stated purpose. The Frontier Valley looks good for whittling. I'm less certain about the Candiru.

for me its the perfect selection of tools and is still nice and thin - plus if you get the alox version, it is just short enough to fit in an altoids tin.
knife - great for shavings, thin profile, takes an edge well
awl - one of the best scrapers for a ferro rod i can think of - great for fine tinder scrapings as well
saw - surprisingly efficient for its size - 1" tree limbs are nothing for this
bottle opener/flat head screwdriver - does what it says
can opener - does what it says
It doesnt have a bunch of stuff adding weight that ill never use like a cork screw, etc.
Exactly. That and the Hiker are prob two of the best Vic edc's you could get, imo.

2, 4, & 6 are legit! I might have to try that clipped profile (#2)

This thread opened so many possibilities for me. However, in part because of the issue of blade length (is what the manufacturer calls blade length the same as what the City of LA considers it?) and in part because I'm now boxing up all my things to move apartments, I went with the quick and easy choice for now. The blade length is well within legal limits and suits my city hiking needs just fine. I gave it a nice deep etch mostly because I was bored.

But I plan to revisit the issue at a future date and maybe consider one or more of these awesome options.

I'm still probably getting either a Victorinox Farmer or Huntsman. If only the Farmer had scissors.

Thanks again, everyone, for all the suggestions!

Keep an eye on the exchange. You will see some pop up in the traditional f/s sub. Our you could by one and have it modded. There is a guy in the services offered section that does Great work with modding SAKs.
