Got a small question: Is it possible to change the blade of a G-10-handle to a FRN-handle (and clockwise) Byrd folder like the Meadowlark and CaraCara?

Have them both PE / FRN but thinking of getting them both in CE / G-10 also!Think for 90% that the answer is 'yes' but just want to be sure…

Hi Pietje,

In theory, the answer should be yes, it's ok.

But in reality, these knives are put together by professionals. they assemble knives all day long, every day. They get good at what they do.

If you take it apart and exchange blades and they're not as exactly "tuned in" like the professional did it. is that ok?

.001 one way or the other often makes a difference in a knife lock.

Thanks for your answer! I assumed that the blades from the FRN and G10 folders come from the same production line, so they would be exactly the same. But as the knifes are assembled might bring some very very small differences above. I have trust in the quality of Spyderco/Byrd so that changing the blades will not be a issue.

So do they select sets of blades, lock bars, etc, that make the best fit set, or do they take the next of each from inventory and re-grind and re-assemble until they fit better?

Hi Carl,

More a case of expertise than parts. Kinda like a backyard mechanic compared with a professional mechanic. the professional just knows more about what they're doing, tricks.

Hello,

I have all the Byrds released thus far. I think that changing blades around will result in less than "fitted" performance like Sal is trying to politely say.

Frankly, I've collected all the Byrds thus far because of #1 QUALITY, #2 QUALITY, #3 Function & #4 PRICE. For the money, buy a Byrd with the scales that you like might be something to consider for the price.

Cheers - Joe

First of all, I am surprised at how well these knives are fitted together. The lock up seems better on the Byrds than on my of the regular Spydercos. The G-10 Cara Cara I got (and the FRN one) lock up better than any Manix or Para I have owned.

For the price, you are better off buyng several Byrds than trying to swap blades out. You can get one of each and still not spend all that much money. You could probably buy every model in every variation of the Byrds for the price of a handful of the higer end Spydercos.

Byrd’s are sweet, quality ans cheap knifes. I EDC my Meadowlark and Delica 4 (both PE FRN) but have to say I like my D4 a lil better.

Kinda what I am planning to do…But why not buy a second CaraCara in a complete opposite configuration and change the blades so you have actually 4 knife configurations!
