I forged this one from 1 inch mild steel bar stock and forge welded a 5160 high carbon steel bit for the cutting edge. I really like making and using these little axes; I keep one in a day pack in my truck so that it goes with me every time I am in the woods.
Forged from mild steel with a 5160 cutting edge
The edge is heat treated with three normalizing cycles to assure a fine grain and a suitable hardness. This axe will have to be sharpened with a stone, a file will just skate over the edge.
White ash handle that has been dyed to show some slight curl
Haft length: 13 inches
Heat length:6 inches
Cutting edge: about 3 inches
Simple leather edge cover
