I forged this one from mild steel and forge welded a high carbon bit (3/16 inch 52100) for the edge. I heat treated the bit the same as I would a large chopper to Rc 58-60 so the axe will hold an excellent edge and will require sharpening with a stone; a file won't cut it.
I keep one of these in a day pack in my pickup and take it with me every time I am in the woods.
Mild steel with a 52100 bit properly heat treated to Rc 58-60
Ash handle modified from a boy scout type
Handle length: 11 1/2 inches
Heat length:7 inches
Cutting edge 3 inches
Leather edge protector, not belt loop
