I was thinking about putting together 2 kits using 2 small coffee cans. What do you guys recommend I put in them just for starters?

I would suggest two different size coffee cans, stashing the smaller inside the large one. a small PSK you build to suit your needs,First aid, small fishing kit(if needed)candle, firesteel, waterproof matches, bic, cheapy poncho,30ft paracord, whistle, led light,SAK(your choice on model), small FB,sharpening stone, signal mirror, heet sheet blanket, brass snare wire,HD Foil,MP1 water purify tablets, quart ziploc bags for water container,ETC.... all pack in a small coffee can and slightly larger can to be hobo stove,is what I'd do.

That is pretty much what I have ina few I have. I have one in my truck, and I gave one to my brother, my mom and my dad for their cars. I also have a small coffee tin seperately in about each room of the house if I don't have enough time to get my full bag ready, I grab it and go!

I have seen a few done with a couple of different sized stainless steel "things" from wal-mart. I think they used little canisters. Can't remember where I saw em, but I'll love for them and post a link here if I find them.

i keep a small coffee can with a coat hanger bail (long enough to fold under the bottom to take up minimal space) in my bag usually. i normally nest a 1 litre nalgene inside it. this makes it easy to take my bottle out and replace it in my back, because it keeps my other gear from closing in on the space left when i remove the bottle.

as for making it into a proper kit, i would say the basics of shelter, fire, water, food and signalling should all be contained. a space blanket (i have been happy with the AMK), some water purification tabs, one or two meal replacement bars, and a auditory and visual signalling devices (AMK space blanket doubles here, whistle, flashlight, etc), bic lighter and prepared tinder (fatwood, PJCB, storebought fireplace starters, etc)
