Small Diameter Contact Wheels

I am finalizing the parts list for my grinder build and am considering the value of going with rubber on the drive wheel and one of the 2" wheels on the Beaumont platen attachment - how useful do folks find these?

My square wheel grinder platen has rubber wheels. I tilt the platen and use it cut out a radius of full tangs in preparation for tapering the tangs. Also great for working the radius for guards, handles, etc. They are time savers for me. Maybe it helps somewhat for true tracking.
 
I like having one rubber wheel o my platen setup. But, not near as much as my small wheel and several small wheels
 
Get a serrated 2" on the bottom of the platen, when the platens tilted back, the two inch wheel on the bottom, now jutting out, is great for handle clean up and radius of that size.

When you have the money, get yourself a small wheel attachment for your KMG, perfection.
 
A 2" contact wheel on the platen makes for a much more versatile setup. You can grind on a drive wheel but the rubber makes life much easier.

My 1" small wheel is crucial for me but I would wait on a small wheel, it is best to get set up with the basics first in my opinion.
 
I have mine set up for a 2" and 4" wheel and it really comes in handy being able to rotate to each wheel and doing flat grinding as well as slack grinding. There really is no need for a rubber drive wheel. An all aluminum one works great.

I wouldn't build another grinder without a rubber drive wheel, unless the drive wheel was free.

I've built half a dozen or so grinders, and have 5 right now.
All of them, including my KMG have been upgraded to rubber.

Much better tracking, and transmission of power.

I'm in the middle of building a dozen grinders at the moment, and they will all have rubber.

AVigil, I love that multi-platen setup. Is that a GIB from PolarBear?
Is it quick to square the platen to the tool rest when converting back for flat grinding?

It is the one from Polarbear , but I took a grinder to it and made it thinner to accommodate the 4" and 2" wheels better. I think PB forge should change it like mine, there really is no need to make it as large as he does.

To square the platen get yourself a welding magnet, the red ones that sell at Harbor freight work well. Lock in your rest then place the magnet on it and up against the platen and then adjust the platen flush to the 90* angle of the magnet and lock it down.

One bit of advice is use the harden bolts, nuts and washers with the tool arm and multiplaten. It will keep you from wearing out the bolts and nuts from the amount of use of tightening and loosening.
