Nice overall shape, looks handy. Personally, though, I'd make the dips in the front of the handle a little bit deeper, maybe 1/8" more, max. Pop some more holes in the handle for better weight distribution, IMHO, knives feel better with a heavier blade. Also, you may want to round the spine along the handle and round out the butt too.
thanks man. its gonna have lots of holes in the handle. the thing is a beast at 1/4" but i like i said, this is kinda a practice small knife for me while i wait for the UPS man to come with my new .156
making some decent progress on this with my Pferd. since its so thick i am taking the blade down to about .15 before i start putting the bevels on it. i am not sure if this is a good thing or not. the hardest part will be the transition to the handle/scales. you can see in the picture with the dia. lines that i want to make that the ricasso area. i also drew in the choil so you can see where that will be.
so i will have a plunge line, and then where the ricasso and scales meet i have to make some sort of transition there too. i am planning to make it a curved transition with my rattail file and finish it out with the chainsaw file. gonna be fun.
get some dy kem and coat the blade so you can watch your progress while filing. or a fat sharpie works. Dykem or a sharpie is a cheap simple tool that can make life easy. May sound stupid but I even use a sharpie when I am sharpening
thanks mccandmatt. been using some sharpie on it for now. took some time to reshape the transition from the handle to the ricasso. i think i finally got to a place i like. again i striped the ricasso area. this will get a pretty once over with sand paper when i start the bevels tomorrow. should have the bevels done tomorrow too. these little ones certainly get done a bit faster than that monster i made to start.
the spine of the blade is getting down to about .125 so i should have a pretty nice blade when i get ready the bevel tomorrow.
so got #2 ready for HT. kinda happy with this one. it was really a test of my filing on a smaller blade. and it was also making sure i got the hang of another blade and finishing techniques before i start making ones to give as gifts. i had quite the time getting the ricasso transition done, but i think it turned out really smooth. i had to neck the .25 down to about .125, and then start the plunge.
drilled lots of speed holes in this sucker too. and the handle had a huge evolution while i was creating the thing. i kinda like the ugly stumpy look. yeah, it not pretty lines, but i think it will feel really nice in the hand for skinning, and camp type stuff.
i got the edge down to about .03 before HT so sharpening should be a sinch when this one comes back.
lots of pics. bad lighting at night in my place, but you can see what i was able to do with it.
