While I like the small fix blades, I was wondering what is the advantagies over a good folder? It sure is easy to clip a folder to your pocket and go.

Fixed blades IMO are typically more robust. Dont have to be so "easy" on them while cleaning critters.

No fiddling around with cold fingers trying to open the damn things !!!!

I agree with everything said and for extended use they typically feel better in the hand. I have fixed blades I carry in my front pocket that have a clip on the sheath that works just like a clip on a folder and you can get to it as easy and quickly as you can a folder. I carry a pocket fixed blade 90% of the time, even if I have a on dress pants or a suit.

They are more stout, and a blade such as the Izula disappears in the pocket just as folders do.

Don't need to come with an instruction booklet on how to open and unlock.

WSS home (sweet home) of the fixed blade :D

even a small fixed blade can be used for light splitting/batoning- I'd be a little leery w/ this even w/ a quality folder

Can't baton with one, can't isn't as accesible as a fixed blade out of sheath, easier to use with gloves.

there's always a small fixed blade right next to the folder in my pocket. Izula, Breeden PSK, Nemesis, PML, etc... so many great small fixed blades at a fraction of the cost of the high end folders with the added benefit of less fuss.

There are few things in this life that are a bigger pain in the rear than cleaning fat, blood, fur, grease, oil, water, dirt, sand, belly button lint, peanut butter, and jelly out of the nooks and crannies of a folding knife.

To paraphrase a poster I haven't seen in a while (Elen)....why would you want a knife that's already broken? ;)

Sure, and I would be happy to clean them, provided they offered any sort of performance enhancement.

Better than ask what makes a small fixed blade better than a folder, ask why a folder is better than a small fixed blade?

Aside from possible sheeple reaction, I can't think of anything that a fixed blade can't do better. For the past year I've been edc'ing a small Mike Miller pocket fixed blade, and it's been way handier than a folder. I started carrying a small fixed because of some tendon problems in my left hand, but I'm so used to it now, I don't know if I'll go back to a folder. Faster, more convieniant, easier to keep clean, generally lighter weight, stronger. List goes on...

I have hunted in very cold climates for 60 years. I have carried folders and fixed blades about 50/50. I have never damaged a folder in any way while hunting. I carry my hunting knife in the pocket of my hunting vest, it is in that pocket 365 days a year. I always have at least one fixed blade in the Jeep.

The only time that I don't use the folder is if I do not have access to a pan of warm water after the days use to soak the folder clean.

Fixed blade, FULL tang, very dependable blade, don't have to worry about opening, don't have to worry about it breaking where it is joined either, just my opinion.
