Small Fixed Blade Fetish

I just bought a cool small fixed blade by Arno Bernard. I bought it from BladeArt Only 5.5" overall and a 2.5" blade. Has warthog ivory handles and a water buffalo sheath.

I must admit when I first received it (the other day) it seemed somewhat tiny and useless. However, it seems to fit very nicely when a regular fixed blade cannot be worn, but this one is small and classy enough to work.

Kind of an odd change. Just last month I bought a Strider fixed blade and now I buy this minature gents fixed blade.

There are lots of custom knives in your price range. I have found small custom neck/belt knives to be an excellent value and a great introduction into the custom world for those who have yet to enter it. [/B]

HEY, that's ME! Should I enter it? No. But SHOULD I? But I'm afraid. Once I go... there's no going back.

"CAROLANNNNNNE!!!!!!!! Don't go into the liiiiiiight!"

Cold Steel's "Spike" is a nice neck knife although I find it almost too big for that purpose--I do use it the aforementioned "front-pocket carry" role. Inexpensive, sharp, slim and pointy--what more can you ask? I'll probably get another.
Emerson/Perrin's La Griffe is a nice little neck knife, it hides very well under dress shirts.
The Boker/Nealey I like a lot (mine's the original with G10 handles, I really don't like the one with molded ones) although I find the well-designed sheath is great it too is a little big for neck carry so it gets hung inside my coat or carried down in a pant's pocket.
Newt Livesay's neck knives look nice and are not to expensive--they'll probably be next on my "to buy" list.
As the custom makers everyone's mentioned--how about some links?

Hey! whaddya know, that's one of my favorites is an Arno Bernard I picked up at the Alaska Knife show for $40 earlier this summer. It has the 2.5 inch skinner style blade with the Funky South African ATS-34 steel and the handle made from Warthog tusk...incredibly well made little thing, and classy enough that it's almost like a piece of jewelry for me. Carry it in a Carbon Fiber pattern Kydex neck sheath. neat little things they be!

I'm also on a small fixed blade kick. I just can't enough of them.

I don't like neck knife carry much, so the neck sheaths usually get hitched to my bely loop, and dangle in my front pocket. It's not a "pocket clip folder" kind of convenient, but not too bad. As much as like the mini Tek-Loks, I prefer the hitch and dangle method.

That Crowsfoot really does look beautiful. It's the next on my list to buy.

A Dozier might be worth trying. Bob makes great knives, and you can have a whole bunch of different styled sheaths made up for pretty cheap.

I think I'm mostly done with my small fixed blade kick. I've only got one left... a little pseudo-wharncliffe made of 1/16th talonite. I don't really use it much anymore, since I'm currently on a SAK kick.

I've got it set up for inverted in the pocket carry. Very subtle, very secure -- but it requires a two handed draw.

I wouldn't carry a blade this size any other way. This method just works so well for me.

I did a search and found Newt Livesay's website. I looked at a picture of some neck knives and you're right, they ARE nice but it's been a while since I've seen a web site THAT screwed up! Couldn't get prices. Couldn't even see pictures of anything else. Is there anyplace better to see Livesay's stuff or get pricing?

I was just checking out a few of the Knives of Alaska capers. There's a Muskrat and a Cub Bear. They're both pretty cool, but the Cub Bear with the Desert Ironwood handle is kinda what I had in mind. Can't find a dealer though. I could order one straight off their site, but I'm sure a good dealer would have them cheaper. I wonder what kind of sheaths they come with.

By the way, I just ordered the Woodswalker from A.G. Russel. Had it shipped expedited. Can't wait. I bet a KOA Cub Bear would fit nicely into that leather pocket sheath too.;)

I´m a little undecided at times whether to carry a folder or a small fixed blade...depends on my mood. I prefer FBs by far (better handles which do not have to fit the blade and there´s no lock failure with ´em), but I definitely think a folder´s much more comfortable.

Sometimes I carry my Neck PECK, and I got a small custom FB on order and after I got a custom made Kydex sheath with a Tek-Lok attached to it, I´m sure it´ll be part of my EDC rotation.

that I'm only the second one to mention Dozier. Yeah, they are a little out of your price range, but not by much. Mine has the horizontal belt sheath, and pretty much disappears even in full view. I have a straight personal model; approx 2&7/8" blade of razor sharp Dozier D2. Pretty much my EDC do it most knife.
My other small FB's: Dozier Arkansas Toothpick, Lamey Urban Bowie ( my dog-walkin' knife!), a Camillus Arc-lite... mostly a safe sitter right now.
Future small FB's; A Primos dress Tactical, A Jens Anso, maybe even one of Fitch's and/or Fisks small forged tacticals wife/money permiting.;)
I just love small fixed blades, no lock to let you down, no urge to "spine-wack", no tip-up vs. tip-down arguments, just simplicity.

I believe that all of Newt Livesay's neck knives are under $75, most are much less than that. For a few bucks extra, he will make you a belt sheath for your knife, I wear alot of them that way.

Ive got a LYNN GRIFFITH MK1 i like it! SMALL,SMALL,SMALL,BUT VERY USEFULL! To bad that he dosnt make them anymore great little knife with hugh cutting ability

hey, sorry about the delayed response...

"Tek-Lok" which we all spell a dozen different ways thusly making me wish they'd just called it the "Tech lock" to save us the grammatical errors...

It's a very small, thin, and light weight device for attaching a sheath to belts and straps. Made out of plastic and drilled about nine times or so it allows you to carry a sheath in many different configurations, horizontal carry, vertical carry, forward grips, reverse grips, different tilts, etc. The only thing it doesn't allow is for the sheath to be clipped somewhere for instance in a boot, or IWB. The smaller ones run for about three an' a half bucks a piece or so at the local knife shop.

by horizontal carry I'm referring to fixing the sheath to the very front of my belt, just to the left of the buckle, with the handle facing towards my right hand. It's a great way to carry a 3.5 inch or less fixed blade and very, very accessible. it is however, easier to conceal with some blade and handle designs than others. The Lightfoot and CRKT Plan B are both excellent this way for me. I like the overall accessability of this carry and the fact that I can grip that one knife with either my right or left hand.

hope this is of some help to ya'...

I will "third" the Dozier recommendation. If you watch the for sale postings in this and other discussion groups you can do well. Bought my Dozier Yukon Hunter for $110, and have seen the Slim Outdoorsman in jigged bone for $135.

I would also look at the blades in 52100 carbon steel by Raker. Good buys.
