Small Fixed Blade for Girlfriend

Hello all,

I've gone through and searched the site looking for a small fixed blade that I could give to my girlfriend. It'd be used for daily chores as well as a protective measure if she found herself in a bad situation. She's smart about people and places to avoid but I'd rest easier knowing she had something up her sleeve.

Basically I'd like something she can carry no matter what she's wearing. I'd like it to be easily accessible and small. The smaller the better as I would like it to be discrete. To make up for the small handle I'd attach a lanyard of some type. I would like the handle to be skeletonized so I could wrap the handle kind of like a Strider but this isn't a requirement.

As for carry options I'd like it to be something she could wear in a pocket, waistband or maybe even a garter or stocking if she's dressed up. I was thinking the lanyard could almost look like a tassel that would hang down and cover the clip (if it had one) and also allow for an easy draw.

I know this is pretty specific but it's what I've had in mind. If you know of any knives or makers that could meet these needs please post them here. Otherwise I'd like to hear of any other options including other SD options like pepper spray.

Thanks,
Kyle

*** EDIT
Just saw the ShivWorks Loco and it might just be what I'm looking for or at least give you guys an idea of what I'm interseted in.

Have you looked at a ColdSteel spike? It may be a little long, but it does have a thin profile.

Make sure it's legal to conceal a fixed blade where you live.

i think a Hide-Away Knife is what the doctor ordered, based on your requirement of her being able to carry it no matter what she's wearing. the Loco would also be a great pick. tho i would say the Hide-Away is the superior tool. especially against a violent attacker.

some other small fixed blades are the Benchmade Activator (5&1/2" overall) and the Bark River Mikro-Canadian (5&1/4" overall). but they are not on the level of the Hide-Away Knife.

The Spike has a nice thickness but it is too long.

I've thought about the hideaway but it is a little big. On a side note, how does the hideaway hold up in the legal area? Specifically California.

Thanks for the replies so far.

If your get her a knife , please get her training as well. Without training she is better off not carring a knife for SD.

Yeah, there are a lot of options :)

Well, I may go that way, I'll probably end up ordering both and see which works best for her. The Loco would be for more of a surprise cut where as the hideaway could do that and more, but it's just a tad bigger.

As for Cali. knife laws, it looks like you can't carry a concealed fixed blade no matter the length. Might have to rethink things a little if that's the case.

I agree, training is a must even if the knife would ideally be used for a suprise cut and run.

What tools work well for those with little to no training? Pepper spray / gel? Any recommendations here?

would a push knife be an option? BM has a skeletonized handled push dagger (idk if they are legal where you live) cold steel has some push knives as well

My wife Kathy likes the Bark River Knife & Tool MIKRO-Canadian (not to be confused with their MINI-Canadian). It's quite small and sturdy and sharp as all get out. Kathy has one with that bright orange handle. Easy to find in her purse and easy to carry and access anywhere else. You may want to check it out.

The Cold Steel mini pal might be worth looking at. It is very small and inexpensive but would be extremely easy to carry and I think ideal for a surprise cut. It technically ain't legal based on the fixed blade laws but it is so small and that it probably wouldn't cause much of a stink assuming your GF wasn't threatening nuns or trying to get into a press conference with Arnold. I would also recomend the La griffe by Emerson as a SD knife for someone with little training.
Pepper spray is good but I get the impression that most women carry this in there purse and IMO its pretty damn useless there. Maybe an ASP key defender?

I don't know-My GF really liked the SPOT.

Edited to add-I agree that she'll need some training at least if she's to rely on it for SD.

I dont have any personal experience. My brother in law, (a sargent on the NYPD) says that he has seen too many cases of pepperspray being turned on the victim or just angering the attacker to violence (in cases where robbery is the motive) that he would never recomend it to a family member.
Best form of self defense is being alert and healthy dose of paranoia. Remember, its not really paranoia if they really are out to get you!
Tactical awareness and street smarts will avoid you alot of tactical encounters and street fighting.

i have 3 hideaways & one more on order.look around the site.
the hideaway can & will hide in plain sight with a little thought.and the southnarc training dvd is first rate.

ooh look only 3 had to post on the law  :barf:
Pyst only you & your GF should worry about the law, make up your own minds
Because for the most part when you think of protecting yourself you’ve already broken the law.

One of many advantages to the HideAway is that it doesn't look the way people expect a knife to look. I've worn mine openly on my belt or backpack strap and had plenty of folks ask me what it was.

And there are very few knives I can think of that would make it seem a little large... It's around half the size of several fixed blades that most people consider "small", like the La Griffe and the SPOT.

For the sort of purpose you're considering I can't imagine anything better.

I have a lil Loco and it is a great knife but it is not a good knife for EDC chores unless you are willing to take the time and thin down the edge a little. It seems to be designed as a last ditch knife rather than one to carry around and open envelopes.
