I am looking for a small fixed blade to wear on a duty belt. It needs to be in a black leather sheath. It also needs black handles. Any suggestions?

Find yourself a recently discontinued Busse basic #3 or #5 and get a leather sheath made for it. While you are at it, pick up a Busse Assault Shaker.

I'd also suggest a Busse Basic model. If you get lucky some of the early ones came with Black Leather sheaths.

Hit the Busse Forum and look at the thread with the contest re: naming the knife. That might just fit your belt, and at $67, your budget as well. It's a bit on the smallish side, but it'll do a lot of work for it's size.

Buck 102 Woodsman. Black handles, black flap sheath. If you loose it or break it, no tears, just go to the hardware store and buy another.

I've carried one for 10 years and used it for everything from cleaning my fingernails to performing a necropsy on deer to recover evidence.

I've carried a Benchmade Nimravus Cub on my duty belt for the past couple of years. It's big enough for almost any job in an urban context and small enough to go virtually unnoticed by the public. The kydex and nylon sheath blend well with the rest of my gear but I'm guessing you could get leather made easily enough. The M2 steel blade holds an edge well and is easy enough to resharpen. I've used mine extensively for everything from prying doors and windows to cutting heavy leather and nylon. The blade has not chipped out at all. The black coating however has long since worn off the blade flats. The handle is comfortable in use whether or not I'm wearing gloves and the slabs are textured enough to keep grippy when wet.
At less than a c-note I think it's a great deal for a piece of equipment that is guaranteed to see frequent abuse.

Dennis, I don't know how small you are looking for but I agree with Anthony about the D-2 Pikuni---a great little knife!!

Is this purely a defense knife? Also what length? Just off-hand, if you can get away with a black kydex sheath rather than leather, I would recommend the Cold Steel Kobun in Carbon V. I have one in 420 - it's a very light, easily carried knife. It doesn't cost too much and would basically fill any roll you needed. Check it out at www.coldsteel.com. Don't ever buy their knives from the site, get them on e-bay - you'll get it for a much better price.

A Bob Dozier Agent or Bodyguard in D2 would fit the bill. Thought they come with Kydex sheaths I'm sure a leather one could be made.

Dennis,

Call me Friday or later in the holiday and we'll look at a variety of things that might work. We're having the Memorial Day party in the field below the house on Sunday (weather granting). Gwen has a keg of Sierra Pale Ale and award winning barbecue planned. You're more than welcome and we can shoot and check out knives that might work for you.

That sounds like a plan to me!

There are a couple of military patterns on my web site "NEW PAGE" that might fill the bill. The smaller one comes with an optional glass break spike on the pommel.

I give you that they are not real pretty but are designed for severe use.

At the moment they are only available in leather sheaths.

As a Military LEO, I second the choice of anything Busse. I have a Mean Street that's more robust than anything I've yet handled. And the lifetime guarantee is well worth the price. Most important in the decision is the primary use to which the knife will serve. Figure that one out and then find the knife to suit. Although the Mean Street and/or a Busse Basic 3/5 will also do the trick.

Dennis,
The Cutlery Shoppe is now carrying the previous unavailable Bob T Gryphon M10. This is the knife James Keating features in his draw point videos. I consider it one of the most balanced, sharpest small fixed blades on the market. It took me forever to find it on Ebay and now they're making a run of them for this summer. Gryphon M10

You might wish to look at the Brusletto Norwegian knives at Ragweed Forge. You would have to dye the sheath black, but the knives are so very well designed and made. I just bought a Telemark knife from Ragnar and am extremely impressed with it. You may remember these knives, as James Mattis sold them and recommended them for years. http://www.ragweedforge.com/BruslettoCatalog.html

Another choice might be to buy a Spyderco Moran fixed blade in trailing point or dropped point style and either use the extraordinarily well-designed black Kydex sheath that comes with it that has all the neat ways of mounting it or have a black leather sheath made for it. I love the design of the Moran drop point, it has one of the most comfortable hilts that I have found on a small knife, and the blade is perfect for almost any chore short of chopping down trees.

Dennis,

Check the TOPS Sea Wolfe out. Here is a link to a short review that Greg Walker did of both the TOPS SF Command and the Sea Wolfe (Sea Wolfe review is 2nd or 3rd paragraph). The SW review is as it relates to carry and as a duty knife...

Here's a link to the Sea Wolfe on the TOPS site. Also, the latest issue of Tactical Knives has a RAVE review of the SW by Jerry Van Cook:

How about one of the Strider EB series knives?

Or a Buck-Strider Solution?

Just throwing more ideas out...
