Small folders--clip or no clip?

No clip, period.
If shipped with a clip make it removable and send the screws needed to fill the holes.
I carry a BM 350 on a daily basis. The clip has been removed and a kind gentleman from the rec knoves newsgroup sent me the screws to fill the holes, I couldn't find any locally that fit.
It seems with the difference of opinion the optimal scenario would be to send it with the clip but provide the screws necessary to fill the holes for those wanting to remove it.

In other words I completely agree with Bill McWilliams.

Jim,
Thank you, I am really glad this topic has come up as I have some opinions on this subject.

Personally, I like the idea of a clip on a small knife. It keeps the knife at the top of my pocket where I can get to it with out digging, also it keeps the knife from getting scratched by keys, change, screws or anything else that finds it's way into my pocket.

I like to have the knife "tip up", it's just easier for me that way.

Now, when the knife is in someones pocket, with a clip, the only part you can see is the clip, it should look nice. That part of the knife is often overlooked by manufacturer's and makers alike. The clip on the Impluse is really nice. It has some style to it, what with the cutouts and tapper. I would like the clip mounted with flat screws maybe even countersunk.

Then again, it would be nice to be able to take the clip off. I don't see why some plugs like the ones that come in a rifle that hide the screw holes for the scope mounts can't be used. But, try finding them at your local Home Depot.

I also like the idea of a clip on a small knife because then the knife can be clipped to other things besides your pocket. I have a KISS that I use as a money clip. I used the clip and a big rubber band in the thong hole to put a Spiderco Endura on the strap of my backpack. Then there is the one that is cliped to the visor in my car. I have heard people use the clip on the William Henry T10-CF to keep the knife in their shirt pockets.

There, I feel better now that I got that off my chest. Thanks for allowing me to "vent".

By the way, Thanks for the e-mail. It is always good to here from someone in Arab (or Madison). Now, If we could only import some Alabama "accent" into Vermont....

I'm not a big fan of clips so far, but few of my knives have them anyway so that probably says a lot :^) I just picked up a little Puma zytel folder for a song, it had clip but I took it off as I'm just use to carrying a smaller knife in my front trouser pocket. With the clip the knife caught on my keys in one pocket, caught on my hand in my change pocket, caught on my wallet in another pocket, and was sometimes uncomfortable and likely not to last long in another. I don't like carrying items inside my waistband, and although it might be handy in a shirt pocket not all of my shirts have pockets. The Puma is about the same size as a Gerber LST that I've carried for awhile now, appears to hold a better edge, and so far appears to be a nice pocket knife for $10. I sometimes carry an Old Timer trapper, which is a bit bigger and heavier, but anything else bigger so far I carry it in a sheath.

More rambling .... I just picked up an Old Timer 'Mustang', a discontinued 4in lockblade carbon steel folder, which I found in a display case that the store owner had to take apart. I thought that I'd try carrying it in my change pocket but the change started scratching it, so I put it in a cordura sheath and carried it in the same pocket. Not bad, as it seems to carry better than without the sheath, the sheath makes it easier to get change without snagging, and it protects the knife. Would it make sense to offer an 'inside the pocket sheath' ? A clip could keep it up high in the pocket, and maybe the sheath could be set up or be offered with or without a flap to keep it secured. The flap could close on the clip ? Another option of materials would be thin kydex, but I think that cordura or leather would do be easier on hands if you want to use the pocket for other things. A back pocket inside the pocket sheath could be set up for a couple of different knives, provided they're robust or the sheath is.

I'm with Beam on the lanyard. Anything over 2.5" and I love the lanyard option. Clips? I like em. If I find I don't want it for a particular reason, I remove it. The screw holes don't bug me.

If the knife is small enough to be comfortably pocket carried, generally about 3 1/2" blade or smaller, I take off the clip,as I find the clip messes up the ergonomics of the grip. Wish more makers would (and they will!) take note of the Outdoor Edge Impulse and mold the clip into the grip design. Then you don't notice it even when gripping the knife.
