You can't go wrong with the Byrd Robin, especially in G10. This has become one of my favorite knives for it's amazing value. You get an excellent knife for such a great price. Spyderco has always made some knives that are an amazing bargain (see Native at $40), but the Byrd line takes it to a whole new level.

I still EDC my Salt 1, but my robin is rarely far from my pocket, and the people-friendly size coupled with it's good construction and great price as made it one of my favorites for gifting, too. Almost everyone who's getting a knife for Christmas from me is either getting a Byrd Robin or a SAK.

Those requirements simply scream "Caly Jr.". (Though I would recommend the FRN version).
Just under 3" bladelength, 2.5" edgelength. Excellent cutting ability, near zero tactical appeal.

Another vote for the Fallkniven U2. Really nicely made. Mine came from the factory very sharp.

I received a Byrd Robin late last week in the mail (a self Christmas present). SS, plain edge. I do like it a lot, in part because of high fit and finish at a low price. Very pocket friendly (especially after I removed the clip; I didn't want the very visible steel peaking out of the top of my pocket. I also find it more comfortable in the hand now). Being SS it's a bit heavier than I'm used to, so I may break down and get a G-10 or FRN version.

And cut a book... Inspired bij Gary Graley:cool:

Nice job there! :)

As to small knives, the U2 is very nice solid folder, excellent cutter
also the Kershaw Leek with G10 scales, is fast becoming a favourite
of mine, had to redo the bevels on it, but now it's one of the sharpest
knives I've owned to date, which is saying quite a bit!

Here's a shot showing a comparison
Top knife is the Benchmade Rukus
the next is a LARGE Sebenza
and then the Kershaw Leek with G10 scales

off to the side is a Jim Serven custom folder with 1 7/8" blade
a real cutie ;)

But that Rukus, what a beast eh?

Anything like the Fallkniven U2 but with a clip?

I'd suggest the Spyderco Cricket, too. I bought one online without seeing it first and was disappointed at first. It seemed too small and delicate. I started using it as a money clip and probably use it more than any other knife I have, because I always have it with me.

I had a Spyderco Spin briefly and didn't like it - way too small - hard to hold and not much cutting surface. I had a Wharcom, which was nice, but the serrated recurve on the Cricket beats it as a cutter. The VG-10 seems to hold a better edge, as well.
