Small Game Hunting Knife

Only my opinion but the so called trout and bird knives I am seeing are a) too big and b) generally a skinning blade shape. I am searching for a 2.5 to 3.5" (max) drop point to dress and cut small game (rabbits, squirrels, game birds). The upper front of the blade should be sharp in order to make the first insertion easy. The handle needs to be something that will resist blood stains and clean easily. Gerber had one years ago that was about paring knife size. Mine got lost in a move. Any suggestions???

Check out Bark River. They make a lot of knives in the pattern and size you describe.

Check out, for example, the Woodland Special and the Little Creek.

That's just in the Professional series though. Check out the other lines as well. There are many knives that will fit your requirements.

Thanks for the help. The blades appear to be too wide or broad. (Don't know the correct term.) The blade should only be approximately 1/2" wide. Small game does not require more than that to neatly field dress. In fact larger blades generally make a mess of the job.

Have you looked at the Tops Hoffman Harpoon or the Cold Steel trout/bird knife? The Hoffman Harpoon now also comes in a larger version.

Maybe a Buck 112 ("Ranger"), the little brother of the well-regarded 110? 3" (clip, not drop point) blade, non-stain handle, etc.

Walmart should have them for $30 or less.

Link.

cheers

I am using a Buck Stockman now. It works fine except for the blade shape being more of a skinner.

I didn't even consider that you may have been speaking of a fixed blade.

I second the Bark River and would recommend either the mini-Canadian or mini-Skinner, however, the Woodland or Little Creek (hard to find) would do just as well.

I can't really understand where you're coming from regarding the blade being too wide (wider than 1/2"). I've dressed squirrels, rabbits, quail, dove, even a large rat just for fun (less than 2 weeks ago). I suppose it comes down to what you're accustomed to. Maybe you're used to thin blades and that's the way you work best, but I can assure you these BRKT (et al) blades are not too wide for any small game.

Aside from the previous recommendations, maybe take a look at the BM-Snody 210 knives. Either S30V or D2, 2-1/8" long, and about 5/8" deep (wide).

Good Luck!

Willowdog... probably the best I've seen in the Bark River line would be the Blackwater boot knife. I use one daily as my EDC, and it would make a fine B&T knife. I'd also consider a custom... I'll post a pic or two when I get home of one I have.

Willowdog, my first thought was to suggest a traditional folder of whatever style suits your fancy. But what about the idea of taking an inexpensive but good quality Mora knife and modifying the blade to better suit your desires? It wouldn't be hard to do.

I've used a AG Russell Woods Walker for several years. I like fixed blades for their ease of clean-up. I've used on several duck hunting trips and several dove shoots.

The blade is thinner than most of the tactical hunting knives, but it is a great value that works well. I had a belt sheath for mine, it comes with a pocket sheath or kydex neck sheath.

I don't know how stain resistant the handle is, but a Brusletto Balder might be what you're looking for. I haven't got mine handy, but the blade is not very wide, and around two inches long. Ragnar has them.

check out the blade-tech prohunter. I now proudly own 2. They are excellent EDC knives and extremely well suited for all types of game.

There is a wait to get a Charles May knife though. I love his work. I have a knife on order with him as we speak.

I like the Charles May Bird & Trout. That's the type I had in mind. And... I also like the Chris Reeves. Many Thanks. Why is it I always like the expensive things???
