I had a hankering for some "hard-use" knives (though I don't really beat up my folders) and some gentleman's knives (which I use daily). I prefer the smaller PE folders, and don't really carry anything above about 3". So over the last few months, I ended up with (pics below):
  • Three Sisters Forge Beast
  • DPX HEST 2.0
  • CRK Mnandi, Snakewood
  • Case Swayback Jack
I think I'm done with my buying spree after a CRK Small Insingo/micarta arrives in a few weeks. It's been fun and educational, and I've got these beauties to use in the coming years. But what have I missed in the smaller hard-use blades, or the smaller wharncliffe blades, especially in the custom world?

Always looking for suggestions for the coming months... :)

If you want a great folder for a classy look, get a mcusta damascus folder great looking knives, although I see you have that mnadi, so you might be set.

It looks like you have two of each, so probably okay. All of them are very nice knives for their intended purposes.
I do have a Benchmade 755 MPR with M390 and a short blade which definitely fits into the harduse category. The problem with short-blade harduse knives is that they are often "fat" by necessity, and I don't like that banging around in my pocket. I much prefer a longer, slimmer knife like Para2's and so forth.

you need a spyderco caly 3 for your small gentlemans knife collection :)
for a small hard use folder i would look into the grayman dua

Very nice. When you get a chance, I'd love to see a direct head-to-head comparison of the TSF Beast and the CRK Insingo. I've decided to go the TSF direction, but haven't really ever had the chance to play with the CRK, so it's mostly on gut and support for a one-man shop.

Cheers,
Daniel

At a relatively cheap price point is by beloved Nemesis knives Manx. Its a great knife that almost never gets any play on this forum.

For 100 dollars you get:
a vg-10 modified wharncliff
A ti framelock
Aluminum scales with beautiful carbon fiber inserts
Nice anodized aluminum back spacers.
completely ambidextrous thumb disk

Cant speak highly enough of the knife for the price point, could be double the asking price and still worth it. Was really impressed when i got mine.

I love my small sebenza insigno, and just received my micarta inlay. It doesn't get better than that.

Alternatives:

--Al Mar Mini Sere: an underrated knife. Excellent F & f, a gem

--Emerson Mini A100

By the way, another endorsement for Nemisis knives. Among other qualities, their customer service is beyond excellent.

Have Alan Davis make you one the way you want it! He can do either style. You get to design your own knife from start to finish. Good Luck! Kevin :D

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I have a Bradley Alias I that I use in the office. I guess I just want something else. Great info here.

E.L. Iverson makes very nice custom gentlemans folders, occasionaly he will put them up for sale here on the forums. Here is one that I own.

Spyderco G10 Manbug. A little (tough) knife for a little cash. You could try the Spyderco Leafstorm for a little larger, tougher, nicer knife and a little more cash. I have and enjoy both.

How is the F&F on the knife? Would you rank it in the same class as BM or ZT or more along the Spyderco import line? Thanks.

OP here: Wow, awesome suggestions, some I've never even considered. Jaiofspam recommends a Caly 3, which I'd also highly recommend. It has a quality feel, great fit and finish and a FFG blade that's just right (if you like a choil); the carbon fiber scales are pretty sweet. I'd also be curious to hear more about the Manx...and will be googling every other recommendation, too!

expwmbat, I had similar reasons for picking up the TSF Beast. Jim was great to deal with. The knife doesn't feel like a museum piece or a collecter, it feels like it should be used.
