Small knives: Busse vs Fehrman advantages?

Knives are tools. I don't concern myself whether my wrenches are holding their value. No one lives forever. Buy a good knife, use it. Some things aren't meant to be analyzed too much. I was you ten years ago.

And I was you 10 years ago :) I owned about $10k in tools at one point, and probably far more than that in total. I had cheap ones, expensive ones, used ones and a whole lot that were "too good to use". I bought them smart, but when I got done selling them, I learned a few things.

1. Good quality used tools in good condition do not lose lose value when you use them a little more before selling.

2. Almost nothing new will retain value after having been used. The ultra rare exception is for things increasing in value enough that it keeps up with the used depreciation. Stuff that wears out almost NEVER does that unless it is very special, like an Edison phonograph or a Leica camera. I don't remember seeing anything like that in modern equipment until I found Busse knives. They're made to be used AND treasured. It's truly unusual, and I think they have a shot at becoming legendary in 50 to 100+ years when old grannies start feeling like they won the lottery after taking them to Antiques Roadshow.

Like you, I like to use my tools. Like everyone, I like to save money and maybe make money. I'm lucky enough to be able afford to do both, if it is at all possible, and with Busse knives, maybe it is? Another luxury I have (for now) is some free time to over-analyze. If all that makes me healthy, wealthy, and wise, then I'm pretty happy too.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm leaning away from Fehrman and choils now. I've started to look at swamprat, and the many other suggestions too. Keep them coming! Anyone heard of Farid Mehr CPM REX 121?

Yes. He has released so me really great designs in great designs.

I've used my Fehrman Last Chance for quite a bit during the last years. Although I can't compare Last Chance with a similar-sized Busse (I rarely use my smaller Busses), the knife itself is good in heavy-duty cutting and feels comfortable. The downside is that it is very susceptible to rust in outside, wintry conditions, albeit 3V is not rust-resistant of course. And though its edge retention is OK, it takes me some effort to have it really scary sharp. I do like the knife, but I am not sure whether the current price of over 400 bucks for the satin version can be justified.
