I was wondering how small kukris come. Anyone point me to models and or pics of small ones? Do they come in 5-6 inch blade lengths and how would something like that work for every day camping chores? Really like kukris but I don't carry large knives.

There are at least three models that are usually quite small; of these the Kagas Katne is probably too small for what you want. Either a Bilton or Karambit-C might work for you. One of the 12" overall length models might work too.

is probably too small for what you want. Either a Bilton "This is the smallest full fledged khukuri we make. Does numberous small tasks quite well. About 9 inches and around 3 to 4 ounces"

A 12" AK or Pen knife works great around camp.

So would a 12" have about a 7" blade and the 9" about a 5" blade? Sorry, I kind of go by the blade length when thinking what I want.

Did a google search and the Bilton showed up with a ruler next to it. :) Looks about 5 1/2".

Shotgun, 12" CAK is about 7" of blade in front of the Cho and weighs in around 20oz, bolster to tip is a hair over 8"

I've got a baby WWII made by Young Sher that I like very much. It's about 9 inches in total length and can do a little bit of chopping.

Hey Steve Tall; thanks for doctoring up my post. I was running late for an appointment and headed out the door within 30 seconds of my post or I might have done a better job myself.

I have a 12.5 inch Ganga Ram/Bonecutter and I love it. To me, it's the perfect camp chopper. I did a simple review a few months ago, but couldn't find it during my short search. I highly recommend the smaller khuks. My son loves his Bilton, though it's really just a neat knife and not any kind of chopper. Just don't tell him that! I would look at the 12 inchers. I used mine to trim some bushes recently and it was perfect and it chops way above it's class. Take care and God bless.

I found the link.

No biggie, we pitch in where we can here in Auntie Yangdu's showroom.:)

My 12inch oal Bonecutter has enough heft to 'lite' chopping while having a blade able to do food prep., including cutting tomatoes! :D

Enjoyed my Pen knife before I gave it to my brother. Love that deep belly.

He likes it too.

Hey Shotgun - i really like you tag on your post - "Multitasking is a great way to do a bunch of things poorly."

i wish some of my friends thought that way -- LOL

threebit3-There was a Kerambit C sold on the DOTD for $85, so I'd figure between that and $100 to cover all bases. If you call Yangdu and ask for one, I'm sure she'd be able to give you a better lock on the price.

By the way, Welcome to the Forum. Glad to have you with us.

Karambit must be a hot item, they told me "all out, check back in a month"

The 'bits do rock:D

However, for a camp knife, I'm not so sure. I carry mine as a utility and self defense knife. It's a really chunky blade that will not chop all that well as the steel ring both gets in the way of choking down on the grip as well as counter balancing the blade. This makes it very lively in hand, but not that great for chores.

Personaly, I would look at the 14" BDC or if you want to go a bit more traditional, I would look for a 13" AK. The 12" are nice, but that extra inch of blade makes the 13" perfect. I keep one in my jeep because it's so small it just stashes away, but it's big enough to do some work.

Like yourself, I don't find nearly as much use for a huge knife. My roughing it in the wild days are over for a good stretch. Maybe when my daughter gets older, but by the time I might need to pack a huge belt knife I might not have the gusto to swing it any more;)

While not the bruising powerhouses that their big brothers are, one should never look past a small khuk simply because it won't chop like an 18"er. Put a 12" Siru next to a Ka-bar, then go to town trying to limb a marshmallow stick or tent peg. The Siru is gonna eat up that Ka-bar's lunch;)

I have a bilton that is just a bit too small in the handle for me. I don't have ham hands but usually wear size L gloves. My 12"/ 13oz siru, on the other hand, has enough handle to really grip and enough weight to chop without being too cumbersome do some food prep. I've sliced bananas into 1/8" slices and chopped a fairly neat hole in the top of a coconut without spilling much of the milk.

If you're after a 5" blade you might look at the Kumar Karda. It's a straight blade, and not a khuk, but a very capable camp knife. A better knife, I think, than the bilton. The handle is a bit bigger than my bilton but smaller than my little siru. Enough to hold onto.

Oh, and welcome.

Frank
