Small Lockback Decision

Very nice. Sounds like a good option.

I don't have any experience with the blade steel but had the small version lock back for a few weeks before returning home from work and giving it to my friend. It came shaving sharp and the f&f was top notch with no blade play or rocking. Always worth a look. Hope I helped.

Hello Lenny, hello from the other side of the Delaware, if I threw a rock I could probably splash ya.

My suggestion would be the Buck, nice slim folder, great lock up.

Lenny, take a look over in the General forum, I'm givin' away a Remington R5(it's a small well made lockback) for my 11,000 post, , make a post in the thread, ya might win and not have to decide, if ya won I could meet ya at Skoogies or Uncle Bucks. ;)

Buck all the way.... I mean they have a forever warranty, they're Christian owned, and honestly... The old 501's will last forever. My buddy has had his for 30+years. The 112 is very nice also

I tend to think of the 501 as more of a town/office type knife. It's a fine slender and graceful knife to my eye and touch. And from the Custom shop, it should be a top shelf knife for fitment and finish. I have never owned an S30v blade myself, but it should be awesome steel.

Dalee's impressions of the 501 match my experience with the larger Buck 500.

The knife is very thin and the double bolsters make it very easy to carry, even in close fitting slacks. The 500 is among my easiest to carry, despite it's larger size.

I find there to be something just a tick off with the Buck 500 series drop points. I would prefer just a bit more belly. But it's still a wonderful knife.

In the end, I would buy the company. That is, somewhere deep down in your heart you probably have a preference for either Buck or GEC as a company. Buck invented the lock back and all other lock backs are, well, knock off of a sort. GEC is keeping the tradition of small run knife production going in PA and is keeping it real with 1095. One of those probably moves you more. Go with which ever makes you happier.

Heading over there right now.
Thanks buddy!

If the Buck comes with buffalo scales and that S30V blade, jump on it. I am going to order one for that little price if they have other handle options available. I have a really nice Northfield 72 with stag scales and a bubinga Tidioute Beaver Falls 72. Both are good users, and do not take up any room in my pocket (I have big hands too). I had a Buck Cabelas exclusive, not sure if it was the 501, might've been a smaller model, great knife but I sent it to a Buck BCCI member to cheer him up.

Just built my own 501, looks manageable...

Canal Street make a 1/2 moon trapper 3 3/4" that is a lockback in D2 in wood or bone
I do not have one, only the regular slipjoint
But they should be really good

My son has a Buck 500 Eagle Scout knife and it's sweet. I have a few lockbacks, from a great old Schrade Old Timer I won here to a GEC 72 and an AG Russell Spire. I'd love a custom Buck 501 with an S30V blade and some nice elk or Sambar stag, maybe after Christmas if Santa brings me some cash :D

Good luck on whichever you pick!

Cheers,
Griff

Did anyone here mention,or reccomend AG Russell ? They have a nice selection.
