small/med size double bit, finally!

No comparison. Much larger much heavier not as sharp.

I will say I really like the smaller Marbles Safety models 5 and 6? when they are sharpened up but the double bit was really heavy and didn't have the balance IMO.

The Ft Meigs Nessmuk Double bit which is even smaller 14" and 150z I think was a far better backpacking hatchet.

Compared to the Marbles, or the Reeves?

Marbles. It's lighter by a few ounces than the Reeves but longer and the bits aren't as long as the reeves and the edge angle is steeper.

Sorry no Marbles pics but here's the Reeves and Ragweed Forge Ft Meigs contrasted.

i think they are great, and i'll bet the heat treat is top notch, or brother raganar wouldn't sell them and Marbles wouldn't commission them.

i really want to buy some of those for composite handles.

if any buddy has one that he doesn't want, please e-mail or PM me, fellow-babies...!

our slurries will grab a machine bolt that doesn't have a special release sprayed on, and then you can sheer the head off with a wrench pulled super hard - so i think it will hold that head just fine, drafted eye or no drafted eye - plus we put a little kevlar or glass on top so it will be held from the top, bottom, and in between 3 ways - when one way is probably good enough.

do the wooden handles have an index mark of some sort? - so ya can tell which edge ya got going in the dark...? or low light...? or just cuz...? ...har...!

my brain is going to boil until i make myself one of these with our Gen 1 Mk 2 handle - i've always loved the Nessmuk stuff....

most importantly - thanks for the detailed report, brother ryan!

well, i can't diss the style, i like little double bits.. but i felt that the marbles i had belonged elsewhere. i found the depth of cut to be insufficient, the shape of the blade to be sub-optimal, the angle of the blade edge vs the handle to be 'off' and in general a wall hanger vs a user.

my 'user' is a 30 year old sater banko that shaves nicely and stays sharp, so standards are pretty high.. but i honestly had no desire to own that marbles once it was in my hand. have NO trouble with the design, am not running down nessmuk style at all, just think that version wasn't a very good try at it. that's ONE PERSPECTIVE.. :)

not gospel acccording to.. , just my reactions. .

Vector?

I talked to Ragnar about getting the axe head only one time and he said he could do that. So you might want to email him.

thanks so much for that heads-up, brother hollowdweller.

i have always liked brother ragnar.

i will have to call him soon.

How the heck do I delete a double post?

I tried to edit to fix a mistake, and now both show up. I can't seem to make one go away.

sure thing - i'd love to give one a try.

e-mail sent, brother nsaglibene.

Any chance that you could do a handle for full size comp axe? Would the grip swell be a problem?

I know of one pro that was trying a carbon fiber handle last season, which might have been a Tuatahi prototype.

If you want to discuss details, my e-mail is charles.rodda at umit.maine.edu

once a post is there it is there for good. it usually happens when there is a server lag. no big deal as it happens all the time.

what is really funny is when you do a triple post.
