Small necker for survival (pict)

Kevin, your explanation makes good sense. Thanks for expanding on your earlier comment.

I actually have a similar arrangement when I'm camping or hunting -- at least three knives, one of which is an absolute-last-ditch but still useful folder (like a small SAK) and two larger knives that, while not identical, are both capable of carrying me through for a while if I have an emergency (typically a small fixed-blade [my preferred lengths is </= 4"] and a large folder like a 110 or a large lockblade SAK). I've never been in a 'real' survival situation, happily.

When I'm going about my normal daily routine in the suburbs, though, I guess I adhere to the 'orthodox' primary-and-secondary -- a <3.5" locking folder (usually a mini-Griptilian or one of several Spydercos) and an 84mm SAK, like an alox Farmer or a Hiker.

Most of my camping is in campgrounds or daycamps in the woods.
When I am in town I experiment with the primary. Opinel, sodbuster,Okap iand a fixed blade file knife my friend made for me. All good to great.

The secondary rarely changes. It is almost always the Becker necker. It is not a comment on the knife. It is that it is proven to me.

I have often heard of the mini-griptilian. It must be a good knife.

i have a harpoon... i love it.... that is a handy peice of gear to have around...they are a little on the pricey side:thumbdn: we did a group buy a while back over at knifeforums... i got one for me and one for a bowhunting friend of mine....:)

have any of you folks looked into scott gossman of razorback knives, PSK knife...... that is an awesome little knife.... i've had mine for a little over a year now.. i made a nice leather neck sheath for it and i also had someone make a kydex sheath for it too.. the price is definately right.... not too mention the fact that scott is a great guy...

Scott's psk looks interesting. For now though I have to go with what I know works for me, so another vote for the necker.

I just love that little knife. The handle feels a little thin and short for my hands, but a long boot shoelace doubled-wrapped around it takes care of that. I finished the wrapping by thick-braiding the 'leftover' shoelace which gave about an inch and a half of extra holding surface that I can grab and secure with my pinky.

I second the Buck Hartsook. I got one and its very light even with some cord wrap for the handle to inprove ergonomics. It seem small an flimsy and not very sharp but after i touched it up, Yikes! it would fill the backup smaller blade role easily.

I really like neck knives but living in California means I can't wear one. My Becker gets stashed in a jacket pocket where it pretty muchly disappears. I also have a Nemesis Hellion 2 finger necker that isn't much bigger than a 3 blade stockman.
