Hi folks,

I was able to pick up (cheap) a smaller Paragon kiln (max temp =1650) and was hoping I could get some help with a question regarding this thing. I'd like to use it for tempering and whatever else.

It does not have any control for temp or time and I was wondering if I could set it up with one of those digital controllers (plus k-type thermocouple) you see on eaby all the time. Is this doable and, if so, is there anything I need to be aware of?

Many thanks,
Dana

You can call the company that made it and see there is some add-ons to your kiln. You maybe able to get something from them that will work correctly. Hope this was of help. Its not much but I think its the way to start. --------

what is that kiln "suposed" to be used for? IIRC "low fire" for ceramics are in the 2200-2400 range

I fired Paragon an email yesterday but have heard nothing back as yet.

Matt, I think this must be one of those kilns used for jewelry making. It, indeed, does
have a maxium temperature setting of 1650. This would great for my needs if I could control it.

Thanks guys,
Dana

A controller from the maker will set you back $600-700. You can build one from a PID controller and a relay from Ebay.Cost should be $50 tops. You just need to keep the temp even for tempering.

The controller is the standard Chinese type. It will work for what you want. The probe is useless for a kiln. The relay is only 3A and won't last long at that. You will need a 15A relay.

This is not a joke.
Absolute Dummies should not ever attempt to do wiring. It can burn up some expensive equipment, burn the house down, or kill you.
GET SOMEONE WHO KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE DOING !!!

Be safe - Stacy

I have a friend who is really good with electronics, etc, and he has offered to set everything up.

I'll be ordering a SSR and a k-type thermocouple as well.

THanks for the help!
Dana
