Hey,

I'm looking for some recommendations for a small pocket knife that I would use at work.
It's main duties would be opening boxes among other light-medium duty activities.
I would also like it to be somewhat small, a maximum of 4 inches, preferably less, and
capable of being opened and closed with one hand, and have a straight blade.
Steel, handle materials, and locking mechanisms are not a great concern of mine, how ever I would like it to be somewhat inexpensive, so that in case if I were to lose it or get it stolen I wouldn't be kicking myself.
I'll continue to look for myself, but a pre-thanks for the recommendations.

Thank you. :)

Thank you very much everyone for all the recommendations, and I apologize for not clarifying on inexpensive.
I am currently looking into the recommendations that have caught my eye, thinking about the Kershaw Scallion, but still looking and comparing with others.
Once again thanks for all the recommendations!! :)

What is your definition of "Inexpensive"? When I worked in an office I carried a Spyderco Kiwi everyday, It is a very small knife but still handles like a much larger one. I think it would be perfect for what you describe.

For strictly open boxes, I really recommended a box cutter. As far as folding knives go, by 'straight' do you mean non-serrated, or an actually straight blade (because those are hard to come by)?

you can find them for about $30 if you look around, walmart has them and other stores.

Spyderco Ladybug is what I use. They disappear in your pocket. You also have your choice of steel (VG10, H1, ZDP) and edge (plain or serrated).

Any of the smaller Spyderco folders would work. The Ambitious is very affordable and less than 4 inches when closed. I keep one on my desk for "office" use. I carry the slightly larger Persistence in my car.

For the next step up, the new Dragonfly 2 offers more premium blade steel and scale options at slightly less than 3.5 inches. This size is still big enough to be flexible while being very light and easy to carry.

The Delica is slightly over 4 inches but it's a great knife. It's a benchmark Spyderco folder and the FFG blade makes it a supreme slicer.

For a bargain priced folder, check out the Byrd knives. They offer all the advantages of the Spyderco design but at a lower price point. The new redesigns look really good and I've never been let down by the older models I own.

Good luck in your search.

Depends on your definition of small. I've found that for opening packages and other light duties like that my favourite is my Queen Gunstock slipjoint with Amber bone scales and a D2 blade.

A note of warning though is that it comes somewhat dull but once it's sharpened properly it's excellent. Priced at around $50-60

Also a very co-worker friendly knife.

For a box cutter/beater work knife, I'd check the knife case at Wally World.
they have several good knives under $25, like the Kershaw Chill.

Look into Spyderco and Kershaw they both are great brands for the mony. Kershaw leek and Spyderco Delica are both good blades for the money. If you are looking for more traditional look into Buck 110 or a maybe even a Swiss Army Knife. Good for boxes and odd jobs in the work place.

what is inexpensive? Inexpensive to me is < $20. using that guide I would say

crkt drifter - 3.6 closed with thumb studs

buck small folding bucklite max - 4 inch closed and thumb stud

buck small bantam - 3 3/4 inch closed with thub studs

SRM 710 - 3.8 inch closed thumb studs and can buy it for $8 delivered.

However I prefer to carry a SAK even though it's not one handed opening it is more versitle over all.

I do not know what inexpensive means to you, and so here are my suggestions. The kershaw leek is very nice and cuts like a dream. it will run you about 35 bucks + shipping. the kershaw skyline is a very nice knife, and will not break the bank by any means. it is a little bit less pointy looking, and is the same steel, which, by the way, is very good, as the leek. it will be about the same price, if not slightly cheaper.

Ka-bar Dozier Folding Hunter with a few different handle color choices and a couple different sizes and blade shapes for $15-20

Victorinox Camper, Climber, or Huntsman for $18-30

These knives and cheap, old-school slip-joints are all I have been carrying for awhile since they usually out-cut and out-convenience most cooler, more modern designs that cost $60-160.

I just recently moved across the country and was very glad that when I had all my other tools and knives packed up (the wife's doing) and stuffed in the back of the 24' truck already, I still had a Vic Camper in my jacket. I had to take down some of the kids furniture, remove flat thumbtacks and screws from the wall, and a bunch of other stuff before we could actually take off. Gotta love the SAK

Editing to add: Really want to try out a Blade-Tech Ganyana Lite - fits your wants also. The design looks brilliant and gets great reviews, probably from the same factory in Taiwan as the Ka-bar Dozier's.

For around $20, it would be hard to find something better than the CRKT Drifter, Kershaw Chill or OD-2, or a Byrd Robin. You could try looking at the Boker Plus or Spyderco lines in the $30-$50 range. The Spyderco Dragonfly 2 is one of my favourites.

Good luck! :)

Kershaw Double cross is a "must look", small good blades, thumb studs, liner locks and looks great.

I'll throw another +1 for the ambitious. It is an awesome knife. My EDC when discretion and concealment are an issue. Also the quality for the $ is great.
