This is a small chopper made from an old leaf spring.

overall length is 12-1/2"
blade is 7-1/2" from tip to scales
thickness is .200 at the recasso
width is 2-3/8"
nice flat grind with a sharp convexed edge.
acid patina finish
scales are Wenge with brass pins
Belt sheath is hand stitched Horse Butt leather dyed British tan

That is a very nicely thought-out and executed knife. It looks like a fusion of a butcher's cleaver with a camp knife... no doubt it would be very useful for either the woods or the yard!

Thanks. It's a nice mix of chicken chopper, tomato slicer, and kindling splitter. It beats a slap chop hands down! :)
 
I like that one. how do you heat treat? and what do you think the rockwell is?

Thanks. We heat treat with a handmade propane forge. This blade comes from a couple of leaf springs that we cut up and annealed in a bonfire and allowed to cool slowly as the coals burned down (a full 24 hour process). Kinda primitive but it works well. Heat treat is done by heated color and checking for non-magnetic. The blade was then quenched in peanut oil. Tempering was done in two cycles at 400 degrees. I target the rockwell hardness to be 58-59c. This works well for me as the knives that I make from leaf springs come out amazingly tough and hold an edge well.
