Small question

This question is pretty trivial and if this is not the right place I apologise...

I've absolutely no experience modifying or making knives but I've become very interested over the last few years. As an introductory project I'm going to try putting new scales on a cheap little Victorinox Sentry. I know this is a very, very trivial excersize but I guess I have to start somewhere.

I think what I need to do is:

1) Find a small piece of G-10.
2) Pop the plastic scales off and clean up the oustide of the liners.
3) Pre-shape the G-10 scales with a handsaw.
4) Epoxy (2-ton?) the semi-finished scales to the liners.
5) Let the epoxy set and then detail the edges with a dremel tool and high grit sandpaper.

Does this look right and if so does anyone know of a supplier that sells really small quantities of G-10?

Thank you,
Jon

If you'd consider linen Micarta I could send you a few small pieces. It looks about the same, is nearly as strong (which shouldn't matter in this application), and is safer to work with (no glass fiber).

I'd recommend before step 4 you "rough up" the liners and scales where they'll fit together - a few swipes with 320-grit paper will really help the epoxy to hang on. Gonna have to be very careful not to slop any epoxy into the action when you attach the scales, and likewise to avoid hitting any of the blades while finishing the scales flush. Seems doable, though I'd recommend starting on something single-bladed first.

Feel free to email me, and good luck.

I agree, use Micarta. G 10 is just nasty to work.. Also how about buying a pocket knife kit from Jantz or better from one of the folks who post here!

Thanks everyone for your advice, I wasn't sure if anyone would respond. I'm going to go with Corduroy's suggestion for the Micarta (Thanks for the offer Kisu).

My next project will probably be a kit of some sort. Any suggestions on a kit offered by a Bladeforums member? I think to keep it simple a fixed blade might be nice (and a folder after that). I don't have any equipment other than a drill press, a dremel tool and a 6" grinder...
