Small Sharpener for EDC Bag

I used a protractor to measure and cut out some angle guides from a piece of cardboard. They are portable and easy to carry around, but fix them to a hard object so they don't get bent out of shape. I still mostly sharpen entirely freehand. I currently carry a Spyderco Double Stuff stone for my primary knife, plus a ceramic rod and diamond rod for my Leatherman Surge's main blade since it's slightly recurved. Oh, and some strips of cardboard with stropping compound. Final stropping will be the bare skin of my palm. I don't know how refined an edge I can get with what I have, but out in the field, I guess the edge off the fine side of the Double Stuff will still be far more refined than a factory edge. Sure looks like it's the case.

If free hand is the route you want to go, another option I seen the other day on YouTube is the KME field kit. Now... with that being said, I haven't seen that offered on KME's site but they sell everything that was in the field kit individually. The stone choices would almost be endless this way and you could "grow" into it, meaning you could buy additional stones if you have or can find the room.

Not sure how much you need to sharpen but I've heard of people simply carrying sand paper in bushcraft and lightweight packing threads. I think some just place it on their leg and use it and some others will wrap it around a stick or try and find a flat surface to place it on. When placing on a leg I assume they sharp away from the edge like you would strop. I've heard this referred to as the rooster method if using a sanding block. I've tried this with axes, machetes and kukris more than knives with good results so I think the sandpaper on a leg would work, though I'm not sure how I feel about it.

Also, depending on how much sharpening you need to do, the bottoms of ceramic coffee mugs and the edges of glass on a car window work reasonably well for touch ups.

This may not be what you asked for but is what I carry and you could take from it what you need.
I carry this everyday for at work and it takes hardly any space and is very light.
I sharpen every thing from cobalt drill bits and carbide bits to scissors and box knives with this kit. I rarely touch up my knife with this kit because I carry mostly M4 bladed knives and they can go a week without sharpening let alone part of a day so I sharpen them at home. Although the extra fine blue paddle and the Spyderco Ultra Fine triangle rod would take care of the M4 as well.

First the "tool roll". That is the top row of tiny pockets cut out of an old work apron. These are the best work aprons I can find. I would like to find a better one if any one wants to make a suggestion.
