Hey, i got some stainless steel pool railing tubing. Now if i were to cut say a 10 inch peice and weld on a stainless cap with stainless wire(?), get some Salts from Darren Ellis and could i operate a small size salt tube for small blades and stuff? Is there some minimum size for these things? Thanks, the idea of salts is extremely cool and intriguing. I was thinking maybe i could run the little tube inside a cut out firebrick with the famous mini forge bernz-o-matic torches. Thanks.

I have one that is made from a 1 gal coffee can lined with Koa wool. It has a stainless pipe with a cap welded on the end. I use a weed burner but need to add some extra oxygen from my welding torch to bring it up to 1500f. I did however develop a leak in the welded bottom and lost most of my hot salt on the floor of the shop. It worked good for the few times I used it but now I need to make another tube.

I would use at least schedule 40 pipe. That has a a wall 1/4" thick in the lower diameters
(below 6") schedule 80 would be better. You need to match your rod to your parent material for best weld results. Your railing is probably much thinner and will not last long. How long do you want this piece. I can look around and see if I can find a piece of 2" and a plug to weld in the bottom. There was a time I could have all the short pieces I wanted, but some people got greedy and turned the plants policy of letting us have scrap metal pieces into a purely money business and were hauling way to much stuff off that was not true scrap or drop so the policy is now very tight. Jerks. Now all scrap has to go into the dumpsters and get hauled out by the recycle company. The driver is a nice guy though and will save small pieces for us and no one will say anything if I walk out with a say 12" piece of 2" in my hand. I also used to work for another company that is down the road and if I stop in their yard some Friday I have off they may have a piece.
