Here is my second try at a hidden tang. On this one I used a very nice popcorny piece of stag that I picked up at last years OKCA (Wish I had more!). The blade is Aldos 1095 with a nicely polished hamon. The collar is browned/antiqued mild steel. OAL is 9.5", with a 5" blade (tip to collar).
I just realised I didn't snap a pic of the front of the collar, but it is hammer textured as well.
I tried some different thing on it, and its not perfect, but overall I am pretty pleased with it.
Any and all comments and critiques are welcome! Thanks for looking.

Ben,

It looks great, but I think it would look even better if it had a butt cap on it. Easily done (still), and would set it off.

Ben....

Beautiful piece of stag and the antiqued color really sets it off, though I do see what Robert is talking about something to hide that bare end of stag would help.....something antiqued to match the color or a coin ..

The stag looks great and I love the blade, but I agree that a butt cap of some sort would be a worthwhile addition.

Really good looking blade, nicely done antiqued collar, and beautiful stag handle.

As others say, a matching butt-cap will lift this one to a higher level.

Still, it's a sweet one, without doubt.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the feedback!
And since only about 20 makers that I respect say it needs a butt cap........The butt cap is gluing up right now. :D
More pics tomorrow.

Yup... good call on the butt cap.

But.. what's the facetting on the blade? I am having trouble seeing it but it looks like it's octagonal or is the spine peaked and making it 7 facets? Either way that a very exciting feature I don't think I've seen done like this before.

Nice work!

Stuart - it is faceted all around the ricasso and down into the clip. So there are 8 facets at the collar. I was just trying something I hadn't seen before, not sure I totally like it, but it is different anyway.

Ray - Can't wait to see what you come up with. I am sure it will be a stunner!

Thanks for the kind words Greg!

I got the butt cap finished up. Thanks for the prodding guys!

Just the thing. That's a really memorable knife.

Nice blade profile, unique beveling, beautiful stag, and fittings that pick right up on the handle color and shape.

Good job,

john

Ben,

Beautiful piece. Can you share with us how you browned/antiqued the mild steel?

Nice execution, the Butt Cap looks great and I like your finish on the fittings. The blade is very nice on multiple levels.
I don't like that much drop in the handle though.

This knife is nicer with the cap. I,m with Kevin on the dropped handle but it may not be the handle, if the blade tip was up instead of down I think it would not catch the attention.
