i contacted Buck knives in order to get a sheath for my old 118 that ive used for years as my father did before me. $22.50 shipping included, no big deal, im sending the m/o out tommorrow. anyway, back on topic, i was in a small local hardware shop yesterday and happen to check out the knife display (one of them rotary style) which had a few Bucks, so i asked to see one of them(a tactical looking folder of some sort) and when they unlocked the display on the top shelf was a NIB Buck 118 covered in dust. there was no price tag and id bet it had been there for many years considering it was way up top, they dont exactly sell alotta knives, and me being 6'5" was the only one who even noticed it sitting there. i looked in the box, and thats what it was, so i asked them what they wanted for it. the employees kinda looked at each other and said "i guess the same as we ask for the other models like this." their 119s price is $59.99, so ill get to my point...is an old 118 NIB worth $59.99? i told them to put it back up and id do some asking around, so it aint going anywhere until i make a decision. id really like a brand new old one, so i had a hard time NOT walking out with it:D

I'd grab it. Shoot, the story is worth $10. I'll bet it's been a long time since any of the rest of us have run into something like that. I think I'd tell them that since it's smaller then the 119, it ought to be worth a little less and see what they say.

how would i date it, and should i use it? my current 118 simply says 118 and USA

You don't come across n.i.b versions everyday, although they do show up on the auction site once in awhile...

I don't have the knowledge about them to say if its a good price, but others here do. If you really like it, you could bring to their attention that obviously its not going to sell soon because its already been there quite awhile.
Figure out what you want to offer and ask. All they can do is say no.

Yes, I agree with 338375.

The main thing is what is it worth to you. It doesn't matter what it is worth to others unless you are planning to sell it. At $60. you can't be too far off in any case, but you can dicker if you wish. Check the old catalog prices, too.

If it helps any. I recently bought off the bay a NIB 80's tan box 118 for a buy it now of $65. I was a happy camper when it arrived and opened the package. The $65 was plus shipping. I saw that the same seller put 4 more on and they sold the same day. So you have to decide your value. The price if one of the older ones is what you want to pay. Good luck.

Wd,

What color was the box? If it is real old the box will be one of the light yellow colored box's. If it's that old & new stock, then offer them $10 less and use that line that it's smaller than that 119. If it one of the newer 118's I'd only pay them $40 for it. It never hurts to try!

ok, i tried not to lose the fella in what i was asking, so i broke it down as simple as possible. there is no insignia on either side of the model number...he swore NONE whatsoever. but the box is black?? forgive me, im not a collector, just a guy who buys and uses his knives. my old 118 has no symbols next to the model # either, but its seen a couple generations. thanks guys a bunch...woody

i think im just gonna buy it and if i lose a couple bucks by overpaying, so be it.

and another thing, does the style of sheath determine age? it has a flap type

Its an older one buy it :D Even for 65.00 I would have grabbed it the minute I saw her :D
Its a discontinued model, hard to find NIB! Congrats on the find!

Knives made before 1986 did not have the date stamp. Sorry I dont have all the info in front of me but these are what the dates should look like. These are ball parks to give you an idea. Google it and you should get more info. (BUCK date stamps)vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv

Buck (oldest knives) (4?-50's? 60's?)
Buck* (next in line)

Buck (60-70's?)
USA

Buck (70-80's?)
118
USA

Buck (Newest style date stamps)
118^
USA

Is the sheath a flap over the top? Or wrapped around the handle? Is the sheath curved for the blade? Is the stitched all the way around the blade or is the leather folded over and just sewn down the blade edge?

Oh heck, just buy it already :D
