im sorry to have left you guys hanging like this, i been so d*mn furious over the outcome of the situation. i went out to the tru valu store to but the 118 saturday, and the knife was gone:mad:...well guess who bought it? thats right, after my dumb self called out asking questions, the salesman did....he admitted to me he decided to snag it on a hunch. he used his employee discount to top it off. then he had the nerve to try to sell it to me for three times what he paid for it! lesson learned i guess, i shoulda just jumped instead of playing 20 questions, but money is tight right now. winter layoff really takes its toll on the ol bank account. well thanks for all the help guys, and i did get a new sheath for the 118 i already had at least:D that made me feel a little better

Hey, join the club.

We all have stories about knives that got away.

You learn from each one.

:)

Sounds to me like that knife has sat there all those years waiting for you to show up,kinda like the sword in the stone.

and another thing, does the style of sheath determine age? it has a flap type
yes ..it does help with dating the knife

I like the flap Buck flap sheaths better than the loop ones
I think in general the flap sheath ones are "worth " more
At least they are to me.........

lol, well then i REALLY screwed up. LOL...i bought a 112 from that store today marked 112\ , and also found they have two more 118s locked up, they have the more modern type sheath tho, and they are marked. as well as a couple other Buck knives i dont think thats made anymore. theres a 112 thats TARNISHED as the display with no nick on the blade. does that mean anything? they had green and black Bucklite 442s, i havent seen them in several years, are they in production?

woody, I'd run back for that 112 its pre 1980 should have 1 or 2 dots on both sides of the 112, if there are no dots even better, if there are only 2 lines and the Buck U.S.A. is inverted, bow down and give thanks. I'd also get those 442's as well. Man that place is like an abandoned gold mine that you just moved a stone and accidently found it.

I've noticed that in the locked drawers of those display cases you see in hardware stores you can often find old and out-of-production knives. They'll search through them for you and sometimes let you search through the drawer as they stand over your shoulder.

Also, they'll sometimes let you dicker on price if it's shop-worn (tarnished, etc.) , only one left, etc. but you need to be talking to the manager, not some cashier or sales clerk.

Also, Woody, you need to join the BCCI so you have access to all the old catalogs and price sheets, see what's in production and what's not.

I'd love to have you pick up the 112 and the green 442 for me, but I promised my wife in mid January after buying an out of budget Kalinga that I wouldnt buy a knife for at least 2 months....well I got a 3 dot 112 last Friday, a 444 yesterday and ordered an Ecolite 110 this morning. If I had you get me any of them I might have a problem:eek:
