I know first hand how much they are complicated ...my friend in his shop have one which cost more the car he drive ...and he have expensive oneI have seen many vacuum furnace myself from a really big to a rather small one. And I think they are really complicated equipment which unless you plan to do some serious commercial HT service day and night then it doesn't seems to be worth the fuss.

One day i will take some photo so you can see on what kind of equipment I have access, when he is in the mood of course
About a dozen different CNC, two water jet, EDM, Fiber Laser, Plasma ,many lathe ,mills , surface or whatever other kind of grinders ...endless story .
Again , we don t need THAT kind of oven for our kind of job we do . Since you say that you know this matter , what you find / if you followed this topic / that would not work ?
I will make it , only problem is that almost everything i need to buy out of borders.Look , I found several laboratory research around Bainite....ALL test was done with this kind of Furnace like in video here .My furnace would work same way .......so i really can t see why square chamber make difference . Only problem is to choose the best solution around the material and the solution around the sealing and find simplest way to do that . Now I already have a pretty clear picture of how to do it all.............except for FAN , for now ...To be honest the whole idea of creating your own vacuum furnace just doesn't sound it going to be work for me ... but hey, you can prove me wrong by actually made it ! Looking forward it see the first DIY vacuum HT oven from you man.
so according to the video you show restricting/closing the ends of the tube is important.
you can get cast able mud to make plugs from with valves in them as you mix/pour/cure the shape
the way they "Carbolite" show it you are just trying to keep the part from getting exposed to oxygen
by using Argon/hydrogen instead(not sure what other gas options withstand high heat)
if you made your own tube with coils in it (or at least groves for coils) and could close it up pretty well
you might be onto something cool ..
im just curious why the need for a fan when the gas will push the oxygen out of the chamber anyway??

what i thinking is you could easily make your own tube by using cast able refractory and a couple of plastic pipes for the mold.
if you made grooves in the outside of the cast pipe, you could put your heating elements on the outside so the heat would transfer to the inside but, not risk damaging the coils.. that way the
.
maybe a easy design to build as you are just mixing/pouring the cast able refractory and curing it , then cut slots into it or maybe use rope to go around it and pour more cast able ..
this way you get a round heated pipe with pretty uniform heating... easy to make a round shell to hold/insulate the "business part" in the center..
again just thinking out load here but i think it a great idea.....
- The furnace material is vacuum-formed alumina ceramic fiber material and does not drop powder in high temperature, heat capacity is small, energy saving above 50%.
