Small vs. Large Sebenza: An opinion and review

This post is for anyone who is wondering which size of Sebenza to get. I've since learned that the real answer is: You will end up with both anyway, so don't worry.

But seriously, I did wonder a lot, and read everything I could find, but there was a slight lack in opinions from people who had both. So here's my review:

They are both solid knives, with excellence clear in every aspect. If you own one, but not the other, you can only wonder what might be better about the other size, since the one you have works great. Well, the truth is that neither is the "winner". Depending on your circumstances, each shines.

When I use my small Sebenza, I begin to think it's my favorite. The shape is excellent, and it fits very nicely in my jean's pocket. It's non-threatening to people, and handles just about every cutting chore I need doing.

When I switch to my large Sebenza, however, my hand breathes an nearly audible sigh, since this one fits me much better. At such times, I become convinced that THAT one is my favorite. Favoritism with Sebenzas seems to be directly related to the one you have in your hand.

The large is longer than my palm's width, and the thumb stud is better placed. However, the thumb stub on the small is "grippier" (it has inward curves), so they both work well.

The arc described by the thumb lug as you open the large Sebenza is also better suited to the length of my thumb. It just feels more comfortable and natural. Keep in mind that I have fairly large hands.

However, the blade is BIG in some people's eyes, although perfectly sized in my own. So I have the small, for those occasions when size is important.

With that said, as I switch to my small for gatherings and such, it's compactness and simplicity begin to win me over again. So I simply can't decide which is the better one.

If you have large hands, and your friends don't care, I think you will find the large more comfortable to use. Also, because of the difference in length in the locking bar, the sound of the lockup "twang" is different between the two. The small has more of a "clack", while the large is a pronounced "snick". The large just sounds better to me.

If you have smaller hands, or want a knife that will be appropriate in nearly all circumstances, the small is probably for you. Outside of personal comfort, it covers more areas of "need" for me than the large does.

I hope this is helpful. Given the price, and the fact that not everyone lives near a CRK dealer (such as myself), it can be a hard question to find a satisfactory answer to.

What about the Umfaan?

You have to have all three (Zulu Trio).

I like the small best and also order a small wood inlay.

Great timing. I just recieved a Large Sebenza today, the original style arrived when I ordered the Classic 2000. Made me compare the two styles, large and small. I noticed the Classic 2000 small Sebenza fits better in my hand compared to the old style, based on the deeper indent.

Toughest decision is which one fits best, the answer after serious thought - all of them...........

Great knifes, all.

I just remembered another difference between the two, which relates to hand size:

When I hold the large to open it, I use two contradicting motions: I push outward with my thumb on the thumb lug, and inward with my pinky and ring finger on the edge of the lock-ward handle. This makes opening very easy, since only half the pressure goes into moving the blade outward.

On the small, however, this doesn't quite work, since my hand is a bit more cramped, and I invariably end up needing more pressure on the handle to keep it where I need it. However, this inwards pressure on the lock bar -- in the case of the small Sebenza -- increases the pressure of the detent ball against the blade, and makes it even HARDER to open. I really have to get Zen with small, and attempt using pressure without pressure. It works when I get into the groove of it, but it takes a bit of getting used to.

Has anyone had experience with the recent style smalls, compared to the classic? Aside from the thumb lug being more accessible, how will do they fit bigger hands?

Personally i've found the large Sebbie to be the perfect size for daily carry. Even in my rather small hands, the small is well, small

I guess you can have the best of both worlds - carry a large for normal use and save the small for occasions where you need a 'harmless' pocketknife.

My experience with buyers is that folks who start out with a small one usually come back and buy a large one eventually, either adding it to their battery or selling or trading in the small one.

However, those who start with the large one usually stay with that one and don't go after the small one.

The ones who "double up" are, generally, Sebenzaholics or collectors.

I don't know if this means anything but I thought it interesting.

I think John said it as well as anyone has ever put it.I like the small because it fits in my pocket like a regular knife does.I have carried a knife in my pocket for so many years, that a clip feels strange.Either way,as John said you will have to get both, haha.I did.I consider them a good investment.Someone once said that the small would do 90% that the large would do.Do you fellow sebenzinites think this is true?

You have your really small, the Umfaan, then the medium small Sebenza with the Wood Inlay for those special occasions, then the Large comes along, but you already have an old style large, (before the Classics came about) and a New style Large, all are pretty cool and fit well in my collection....

The Classic 2000 is lighter than the old style and narrower handle depth (both small and large size).

Michael, you've been skipping your medication, haven't you?

You really need to start going to those meetings again.

Very good diagnosis. I am working on getting better..........

When the small unique design arrived Friday, added to the need.

A followup: The difficulty I was having in first opening my small Sebenza was discovered to be an over-tensioned clip. I've been using the new-style clip from my large Sebenza, since I like the larger size. But the clip was pressing down on the lockbar quite stiffly. After bending it out so that it's natural resting position was identical with the closed knife (i.e., not pressing down on the lock-bar at all), I've found that it opens as smoothly as my large, which has no clip.
