Just came back from trying the Burt's Bees hand salve. It comes in a quarter size container maybe about 4-5 quarters thick.
I smeared some on a few things to test it.
1. small bundle of shredded eucalyptus bark.
2. napkin
3. cotton ball
First, I tried using a ferro rod and my leatherman. the cotton ball went right up. The ferro rod didn't work. I am sure I could have gotten it to work but I didn't invest too much time.
Second, I got a small lighter and lit up the eucalyptus bark it went up great. It could have easily grew. The napkin went right up too! The salve helped the flame carry over to some added wood shavings.
I am going to have to try the charred cloth. If that works as well as the cotten I am doing it. If it is more of a hassle than just putting a few cotton balls in a container and be done with it.
One could make charred cloth from their tee shirt and the first fire to be used when the primary tinder is used up.
