Smash a compass; Start a fire

I had heard that a compass may contain either kerosene ( old ones probably ) or glycerine.

I believe glycerine is flamable too.

Anyone know?

The theoretical scenario where:

1) Not lost, but exposure more of a problem.

2) Have compass, but short on tinder, difficulty in getting a fire started.

. Sorry if it came out that way. I just think that I would be more inclined to do something like shredding some cloth from an extra pocket or trying to locate some bark to shred for tinder before I would purposely destroy such a potentially useful object. Even if you don't think you need it right now - you never know.
