Smatchet??

I'm waiting on someone to say this was all a joke? Are we seriously discussing smatchets? I mentioned the OP's subject so it's relevant. Right?

I read on wikipedia that the smatchet was designed for self-defense. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smatchet. If this is true, and the source being Wikipedia, I can't say it is, what do you guys think of the smatchet for utility use? Can you use it as one would a machete for clearing brush? Can one baton wood with it? Or rather than can one do those things, is it an optimal choice for them?

From what I can learn about the smatchet, it is a deadly weapon but not designed for utility use. The British did design the Paratrooper Knife that is available from Martindale. It is nearly the same size as a smatchet but much better for general use. There is also the medical corps bolo used by the military and any number of short, heavy bplo knives designed for utility use.

I didn't see the Cold Steel Shanghai Warrior mentioned above. At a blade length of 9.5" it may be a little shorter than the original Smatchets but it's still a very big double edged knife.
